Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

Too many to list. Get a copy of Pavlidis' On and Off the Beaten Path. Did the Bahamas with 7'-3". You can get everywhere but you can get to a lot of places.

Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

I have a 7' draft and I just follow my navionics charts.... not too hard. They are dead accurate

Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

Great thread, many of us on the east coast think of the Bahamas when purchasing a boat and draft is a big reason why. Florida fits in that category somewhat also.

OMFG!

Dead is right.

I personally have seen at least one and have second hand info on at least two more totals based on reliance on Navionics in the Bahamas. The 'at least one' (I think there were two, but I can't completely call to mind the second) was a big boat, too - tried to cut a corner that Navionics said was deep - but had major rocks...

Navionics may be the bees knees stateside, but use your Explorer Charts waypoints between places to avoid grounding or worse.

Yes, I can show places not correctly identified (sand and rocks) from my time(s) in the Bahamas under Navionics.

All that said, do go; 7' is no issue, and the next time, when you aren't in a hurry, you can poke around and discover other places other than the rhumb lines which will suit you.

Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

Yeah we sailed straight over a dry reef yesterday in Barbuda according to navionics. A bit earlier we saw 4m depth in supposedly 10m water...

Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

Electronic charts are only so good.
I never trust them in questionable situations.
A few years ago while transiting between islands in Los Roques my Navionics was telling me I was on land.
Learn to read the water. Always have the sun to your back or overhead, NEVER in front of you. Wait till light to get through reef passages and be aware of surf breaks.
A 7 foot draft will work....just be diligent AND study the Explorer Charts yourself. Like others have said it is your responsibility....I poor over charts all the time, redundancy will keep you, your boat and your family safe.

Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

Same here, first Bahamas cruising with my old C&C deep draft, later with a large 6 ft draft cutter, and the last time I be there with my old CYS 6.6 draft, even Exumas , but to be honest the care and the spots need to be chosen carefully, with great care and precaution you can enjoy Bahamas with a deep draft boat, some places is a no no for deep draft boats but others are fine ... just pick the routes and spots according to your draft.. Enjoy. Cheers.

+1.

The Explorer charts and Garmin electronic maps are way more accurate than the Navionics in the Bahamas, especially off the more traveled routes. I had a Garmin on my own boat for that reason and bring an iPad with the Garmin app on it whenever I charter in the Abacos for that reason. If you have a Navionics system already, the Garmin app is a very affordable way to gain more accuracy for the Bahamas as well as a back up and planning tool. The app is free, the charts for the entire U.S. coast, Bahamas and Caribbean are only $50.

7 feet it limiting but one can certainly travel through the Bahamas, including much of the banks with that draft. One just needs to be more selective in choosing anchorages, channels and cuts.

Re: Bahamas destinations for 7' draft??

As others have said, Explorer chart books! Garmin is based on Explorer charts as is the NEW C-MAP charts. Stay on the rumb lines and not the VPR lines.

Navionics will help you find the bottom! I usually use the Allen Cay anchorage as the easiest place on the charts to prove this. Navionics shows 10 feet! Garmin, C-MAP and of course ECBs shows less than 5'.

Do I really have to be inappropriately cited twice in the same thread???!!! I never used the word "poring." Or the word "pouring." Or made any comment on the distinction! (personally, I prefer the latter...)

Pete
