Azores High

I'm planning an Atlantic crossing in Nov. What would be the South and Westerly limits of the Azores high? Cornell shows a band reaching right to the eastern seaboard. I am sailing from NY to the Cape Verdes. Thanks Kevin.

Kevin, are you thinking of going directly from NY to Cape Verdes?

Hi Pete, Actually I'm going directly from New York to Durban, South Africa, but am wondering whether it would be wisest to go North or South about, around the Azores high. The trick is to try to make one's Easting with the least amount of motoring, to get into the northeast trades down to Brazil. Kevin.

I think your timing is all wrong. South about is against the current and wind and north about, well, there is no way I would want to be in the North Atlantic at those latitudes in Nov. In NW Europe during winter, we have a constant stream of low pressure systems bringing cold, wet and stormy weather in from the N Atlantic. Oh and the nights long, days short.

Either you put it on a ship to SA, or depart NY in April / May for the Azores, then Europe for the summer and Cape Verdes in the Autumn.

That puts you in S America in Nov for the trip to SA.
