Around The Southern End of Long Island in The Bahamas?

My wife and I are anchored in Thompson Bay on the west coast of Long Island in the Bahamas and we need to be in Panama by the first of June. After studying the charts and guide books carefully, it appears that there is a route that goes south from where we are and if we time the tides right, we should be able to make it to the Atlantic with our 6’6” draft.

My question is: Has anyone successfully navigated this route before in a boat with a similar draft to ours? We don’t go fast enough to make it to South Point in one day - can anyone recommend a place to anchor along the way?

On the other hand, if you sailed east from Long Island and went around the north end, what was your sail like to Crooked Island, assuming you had prevailing easterlies/southeasterlies?

I’m grateful for any input.

Fair winds and calm seas.

If you are going to Panama, you will either go into the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico via Old Bahama channel, not east to the Atlantic.

To go around the south end of Long Island, you need to go due west 20nm. The SW side of LI has little to offer. Think Dollar Harbour is too shoal in for your draft. With a NE-E wind, you can anchor along the beach, near Dollar Harbour.

Could go west and south to Water Cay 40nm and down the Ragged Islands.

You can do it! You will need to go W out to the Comer Channel but need to get the tide right, then south to the Jumentos to Ragged Isand
