Anchorage Near Washington DC

I am planing to visit Washington in my boat ,draws 6 feet. and 57 feet air
draft . It will be in may I hope, are there any anchorages or mooring fields in an area with dinghy dock, and access to public transport. I am hoping it would be an interesting cruising destination, where we could visit the area at leisure.

Re: anchorage near Washington DC

Ole,

Washington, DC is a wonderful place to visit, and very friendly to boaters.

The 100-mile trip up the Potomac from the Chesapeake is beautiful and well protected. The Wilson Bridge clearance is now 84 feet...no problem with your mast height.

Best anchorage is in the Washington Channel just off the Capital Yacht Club. Deep water, pretty good holding once you get thru the soft mud layer. The Club has a dingy dock and offers several amenities for cruisers at a low daily rate: use of clubhouse, library, bar, laundry, showers, etc. It's within walking distance of the monuments, Smithsonian, the Metro, etc.

Also, there are several marine businesses based here which are capable of doing just about anything you might need: mechanical, electrical, communications, navigation, structural, etc.

The red "X" marks the CYC docks; there are four of them, just north of the Gangplank Marina docks.

Ole,

We are a Canadian crew from Quebec and are now living aboard near Annapolis. Bought the boat a few months ago and new to the cruising life, we are also planning to go up the Potomac in May to visit Washington!

Name of our boat is Mirliflore. See you on the water!

Re: anchorage near Washington DC

Ole,
Ditto anchoring Washington Channel off the CYC. Two summers ago we anchored there for nearly two months, with an occasional trip to the dock, and used the CYC facilities daily. Don't miss their Saturday morning home cooked brunch buffet, only $5 (when we were there). The folks at CYC are really, really welcoming.
