Anchorage in the BVI ?

Do they charge a fee if you are out in the bay on some of the islands. Ive
heard that as soon as you come into places like the Bahamas there is
a boat that comes out to meet you and ask for a fee. I wonder what
it is like in the BVI and other island in the area?

I had a freind that use to sail down that way around 10 years ago and
he could anchor up about anywhere in the bays and lagoons for free.
Is it still like that?

Mooring Fees

You did not say if you were chartering vs cruising with your own boat. If chartering, there will be a small fees added for Cruising Tax, National Park fee & Search/Rescue fee.

As far as charges for anchoring, No. There are restricted areas designed to protect coral/seabed (National Park areas) ie; the Baths. In that case, 1st come 1st served "free" mooring balls are provided.

In other popular areas (and others), ie; Virgin Gorda & Norman Is, there are large Mooring ball fields where fees are collected privately. ie; Bitter End Yacht club. Yet there are areas on the edges of these fields or places nearby that you can anchor for free.

If you have particular islands/sights/bars that you plan to visit, just tag on & I'm sure the gang here can fill in specific details.

Most the Same

Sure others who have cruised thru will chime in as I've only chartered a couple of times
Here's a link that will help You with check in info
http://www.noonsite.com/Countries/Br...rmalities#Fees

Looks like you will also pay Cruising Permit Fee. Jost Van Dyke is a more laid back stop for Customs/Immigration vs Roadtown or Sophers Hole (west End)....just depends on where you are coming from & what else you need to get done.

Also Chris Doyle's Cruising Guide does a good job helping with anchoring info & the site has comments from users
http://www.doyleguides.com/index.html

Have Fun!

anchoring in the BVI

Chuteman is correct.

I recently returned from a 10 day USVI/BVI bareboat trip.
We only dropped the anchor at one place (Sandy Cay- no mooring balls there) the whole trip to save the time/effort of anchoring and grabbed mooring balls instead.

We saw some private boats anchored near the mooring fields in the BVI.

I would think that only place you could get in trouble dropping the hook is within the USVI national park, along the north side of St. John, for example.

There is a good national park service office in Cruz Bay which should be able to advise for the USVI area.
Here's their contact info; Phone: 340-776-6201 ext. 238
Fax: 340-693-8811
Email: viis@nps.gov
