Advice on heading south

Hey guys, thought I'd ask for some advice from more experienced cruisers.

We're in Isla Mujeres MX (Cancun), and we're going to head south. Seems like we're getting a pretty steady east wind all the time as expected. I see three options.

1) Head to Guatemala (like everyone), but we don't really want to do the Rio.
2) Head direct to the bay islands and then pray we can beat our way out on our way further south after a short stay.
3) Just try to head straight to Providencia.

The route to Providencia is long and I'm not sure how much beating it will be, but do you think its worth it to do it in a straight shot and avoid all the tacking from the bay islands?

Also, thoughts on the current we'll be fighting? We had a hell of a time with the gulf stream in the yucatan channel.

Re: Advice on heading south

Why not Belize? If you cruise Belize you will get a wx window for the Bay Islands at some point. You will get a day or two to get to the Vivarillos at some point too. Same with going down to Providenca etc..

The rio is an interesting place, but having done that already, and being the same age as you guys, I'd tough it out from Isla and make your easting now. Problem is once you get down towards Honduras/Guatemala it's even harder to get out.
