Re: Abacos island family getaway

victor75 - i checked my charts and noticed there are no directions for entering cedar harbor. better stick with tingum's recommendation for foxtown, as there are good directions for gaining that harbor. it's also a few miles closer to west end so you may only have to go 80 miles or so before a refueling stop.

in any case, make sure you have a fuel can aboard in case you have to walk to a gas station - not unknown in the bahamas....

Be sure you check to see if Foxtown currently has marina fuel available. Don't think it does. Spanish Cay definitely has fuel and customs and is not but a short distance out of the way. Approximately 15 nm from Green Turtle if you should be running low.

Any suggestions? Comments?

If you wish to cruise the northern Abaco Cays, you can get fuel at the Grand Cays, about 50 NM northeast of WE.

Home

Foxtown Shell is about 75 NM east of WE. According to their page and one previous post, it may be closed due to hurricane damage. It appeared to be open when I was there last year, so you might want to contact them. Page with contact info:

Foxtown Shell

Coopers Town and Spanish should be within your stated 110 mile range. (but not by a lot and you may have headwinds) Green Turtle would be cutting it very close.

Re: Abacos island family getaway

I been going to Green Turtle every year for the past 7 years and to go to Grand Cay would be out of your way unless your coming from North of Ft. Pierce. Spend the evening at West End (OBB) and get up early and head to Spanish (90nm), fuel up and on to GT or enjoy an evening at Spanish. Bring a 6 gl tank or something similar with you if you have a big concern. Cooperstown does not have a marina so if you go there you will be carrying fuel back to your boat.

Did they loose this recently? Last time I was there, the shell dock/marina was very accessible and easy to tie up to.

We were there last year but I did not go into Cooperstown. Was it there last year?

Yep, it was a year ago that I stopped there. I was back in the Abacos about a month ago, but did not stop at Cooperstown, but also heard nothing about the fuel dock being gone. That's why I was wondering if your comment about having to carry fuel was based on some change I was unaware of.

Re: Abacos island family getaway

The Abacos are pretty safe. I wouldn't worry about anchoring out at nite. They have had some boat thefts in past years mostly 20-35ft center consoles with 2-3 Yamaha engines but not boat boardings, etc.

Re: Abacos island family getaway

Thank You ! We feel more comfortable going to Abacos.

Also I have no air cond. in my boat. I assume its pretty hot at night in the bagamas in June. Would portable fan or a couple of them running all night in the cabin be enough to circulate the air in the cabin for good enough comfort? Any other suggestions?

Thank you all!!!

Re: Abacos island family getaway

June is a great month, after that it gets hottier and buggier. Wind scoops and fans help. Screens are a must for the summer as the noseeums are fierce!

Re: Abacos island family getaway

I used to sail the Bahamas quite a bit in June and early July. Water is great then. Air temps can get warm, but then it's easy to swim to cool off. I found taking a dip at sunset, really helped me stay cool at night.

Mosquitos and no-seeums can be an issue that time of the year. If it's calm, anchor farther out. I second Tingum's recommendation regarding wind scoops and screens.

Re: Abacos island family getaway

All good advice. Ultimately you have to decide what is too hot. In June you usually have a breeze in the evening although not always. Without breeze it will be warm but bearable. Bugs have big jaws so have spray.
