Abaco to Eleuthera

We are new to this site and welcome any comments and information others may share.

On our 47' trawler, we have spent several winters in Abaco and want to head to the Exumas this year before heading north again. It appears that a typical way south consists of staging at Lynaryd Cay then off to Spanish Wells. We are planning to leave in mid May, 2011. What is the best weather pattern for this course if it is a reasonable approach? Are there other better routes? Our trawler likes a following sea. Is the ocean swell typically from the north at this time of year? We have also heard that the marinas, restaurants, and food stores all do not accept credit cards, is that the case? are travelers cheques a good alternative? lastly, winters in Abaco are bug free, what should we expect in the way of temperatures and insects?

Re: Abaco to Eleuthera

I've done that a couple times. Cold fronts and north winds are not as common in May as they are in winter, so light winds might be your best bet. From the Egg/Royal area, you can either spend some time to enjoy Eleuthera, or head directly to the top of the Exumas.

It was also my experience that fewer places accept credit cards in Eleuthera and the Exumas than in the Abacos. I found ATMs in a few places in Eleuthera and in George Town in the Exumas.
