26' Hunter in the Caribbean

Hey everyone... I was just wondering if a 26' hunter cruiser/racer is ready to sail average Caribbean swells.

That's a pretty vague question. Is the Hunter a keelboat, or is it a water ballast model? Is it one of the older Hunters (say late 70's to mid 80's), or is it one of the newer ones? What do you mean by "average Caribbean swells?" Do you mean offshore between islands, or do you mean in the Drake Channel between say Tortolla and Peter Island?

I think it depends on your ability and experience.

If you aren't an experienced skipper, the Jamacia to Panama area can get pretty nasty.

Walter,
With all due respect, that's a lot more trip than I'd be willing to take on that boat. I would say that you would be fine crossing over from Florida into the Bahamas, and sailing in the protected waters of the Abacos. You would probably be fine crossing from the Abacos down to Eleuthera and then over to the Exumas (all the while minding your weather windows very closely). I think that would be about as far as I'd be willing to push it with that boat, but that's just me. I found myself in uncomfortable positions on my Island Packet 35 in the Bahamas several times, and was very glad to have not been on a lighter boat.

The answer Walter, is yes...downwind... but you want to go to windward.

Lowcountry has it right.

Going east, north or south of Cuba is all into wind and current, and the Windward Passage can get exciting.

I did Panama to Grand Cayman going north in November...basically the same trip as Jamaica to Panama going the other way.

That would be a very hard trip in a boat with an outboard if the winds were not friendly and there are some very nasty shallow areas en-route that can get very ugly.

I sailed a light F31 tri with a 15hp outboard for 6,000 miles, but it would have disintegrated going the route you choose.

Now I've seen the boat I've changed my mind... thats a Macgregor by another name... water ballasted boats like these are not up to that kind of trip... the designs all wrong for bashing to windward... but then you could make a name for yourself...
Bene's, Jene's, Bav's all slam... but that'll knock your teeth loose... change your boat or your route and follow the coast to Panama...
