YSA 1-15: ISIS threat to yachts???

Anyone seen this advisory from of all places, the Marshall Islands about ISIS in the Med

It's a bit hard to take seriously when EU & US authorities have not issued such an advisory.

Advice that yachts and other shipping in the Mediterranean could come under attack from heavily armed ISIS fighters using speedboats to conduct attacks from the Libyan coast.

YACHT SAFETY ADVISORY YSA-1-15
To: Commercial and Private Yacht Masters, Owners, Yacht Managers, Agents,
Classification Societies and Appointed Representatives
Subject: ISIS THREAT TO YACHTS
Date: 23 February 2015
Please be advised that yachts and other shipping in the Mediterranean could come under attack
from heavily armed ISIS fighters using speedboats to conduct attacks from the Libyan coast. It is
feared that luxury yachts could be singled out as part of a piracy campaign that would threaten
shipping from Gibraltar to Greece. ISIS pirates would pose a greater danger than the Somalis
who have attacked shipping in the Indian Ocean because they are better armed.
Please also refer to previously issued YSA-4-12 Indian Ocean piracy and YSA-2-11 on Piracy in
High Risk Areas.

The reason this has come from the Marshall Islands is likely due to that nation's increasing popularity as a 'Flag of Convenience' state for large yachts... Right up there with the Cayman Islands, St Vinvent, etc, it's amazing how many large yachts I'm seeing these days sporting the home port of Bikini, or Jaluit... It's not just yachts, of course, the DEEPWATER HORIZON oil rig which blew up in the Gulf of Mexico a few years ago was of Marshall Islands registry...

I don't know, this advisory doesn't sound all that implausible, to me... A large yacht could certainly be an appealing target for such a group, and despite the security measures taken on most large yachts, many might still be relatively 'soft targets', in the end...

"The RMI Registry is the third largest in the world, with a fleet of over 3,180 vessels and 104 million gross tons at the end of May 2014."

Re: YSA 1-15: ISIS threat to yachts???

I don't understand why any super yacht registered in MI would ever choose Jaluit as the home port when Bikini is the other option

Hard to figure why this even has to be pointed out, given today's situation.

On the other hand, if you do choose to sail the Med, be sure your insurance is paid up -- and some good life insurance that will cover acts of war, as well.
