Which Way Around Sicily for Best Wind ?

I will be delivering a boat from Menorca to Corfu in a weeks time. On previous deliveries the Straits of Messina were the shortest route but for this one there is virtually no difference in distance if I go south of Sicily.

I need to minimise passage time if possible and was thinking that South of Sicily may give me better winds......

Grateful any thoughts and the experience of others.

Re: Which Way Around Sicily for Best Wind ?

Have to say I've only sailed south sicily, en route Cagliari to Siracuse last year. Wind classic summer Med, flaky and not brilliant but we did sail most of that route without an engine. It was slow - about 4 days not counting stop overs but easy and peaceful. If you motored it, the seas were flat and easy so you'd do ok.

Note that there are a lot of desperate people crossing the water from Africa at the moment.

Lots and lots and lots of dolphins between Sardinia and Sicily and one of the few places with no night time light pollution from the loom of the land. None of these will bother you on a delivery trip, but other forumites might be interested.

Re: Which Way Around Sicily for Best Wind ?

Thanks for that, I've done the Straits of Messina a couple of times going south. I probably need to refuel in Sicily and I've heard that this can be problematical in them presently.

There are a couple of places on the North coast I've used before but looking at GRIB files it looks like the wind may be better going south......

All I can say is avoid Reggio Calabria dump of a marina and € 50 a night.

Yes, I second that about Regio Calabria with the exception that in 2012 it was 60 euros, not 50 and the shower and toilet were a misery.

About Sicily, in the summer in the North the predominate wind is NW. What about on the South coast? The same direction?

You can stay for free and avoid the strong current that circulated in the marina by tieing up in the commercial dock but close to the marina by the coast guard boat. It's free but you may have to leave at 7/8 am if a big boat is coming in. Don't forget to meet Salvio the taxi man. Just ask for him at the fuel dock. We had a great time there.

The route you are planning is the same route that we took, except we headed to Lefkas. The south of Sicily is a very pleasant sail. we did not stop and went straight to lefkas good winds all the way.

If you take the south route fuel in Trapani is difficult to obtain but if you want to you can anchor within the harbour close to the old fort, just make sure you call Trapani VTS / Coastguard on channel 10 to obtain permission first. Fuel in Marina di Ragusa is available from the dock.
