Turkey Blocks Google Earth & Google Maps

Recently Turkey blocked YouTube as some Greek geeks started posting videos defaming Attaturk - a real criminal offense here in Turkey.

In the last few days Google Earth has been slower and slower till its finally died in the butt and a bit of research has shown Turkey has blocked most Google servers.

Not good when we are doing our passage planning!

No worries mate, I will post you a paper chart, you may remember seeing one in sailing school ; and I will chuck in a pencil - that should tide you over until you reach the western world again.

There is even out that you can use anywhere in the world!

Ouch - but luckily, Mark, you have the ones you need downloaded and stored in cache already....

Perhaps, since I'm not working now, and have little better to do than mess around on the internet all day, I could save the areas you need and email them..... not sure if that would help though - it wouldn't be the same as scrolling in out and round about....

Earlier this month, Turkey expanded the ban to include some Google pages that use the same Internet Protocol addresses as YouTube, to prevent users from circumventing the ban. The search giant Google Inc. is YouTube's parent company.
Turkey tightens Internet control in YouTube feud

Not only this but parts of ther Google News site are now cut off! Including the ability to get news from the USA!! Once opn one news site the other google new service links are disconected.

In China they generally allow access to blocked sites from hotels that cater to foreigners and other places business travelers congregate. Not sure if Turkey does the same, but you might try trying to pick up a wireless signal from a hotel.

Don't worry, Mark. We'll get you out of there.

Steer 255 magnetic for about 100 nm and await further instructions.
Oh, and watch out for islands.

Next stop is the Aegean, right?

Absolutely, we don't want him staring in the sequel to the film Midnight Express
