Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

We are planning to winter in Sicily and are looking at 2 marinas that were suggested as options. Ragusa and Cala del Sole close to Licata. Looking for comments or suggestions on these 2 options. We will need to haul out for some maintenance work as well during that time.

Thanks
Angela

Re: Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

Sicily is wonderful even in winter.

I'm from Italy but I've never been in those marinas. Here you can find more information:
Marina di Ragusa
The marina « Marina di Cala del Sole

I hope it's helpful.

I would go for the one that is closer to Nero di Avola.

Ragusa is supposed to be very good and popular for winter liveaboards as well

Re: Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

Wintering in Tunisia is cheaper and more comfortable than in Sicily.
Marina Cap Monastir has all capabilities for haul out even for catamarans.
All repairs are done in Port de Peche of Monastir in very good quality but less than half the price as in Italy.
We are in Monastir since 3 years now.

Re: Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

When I enquired two years ago Tunisia was approx. 40% more expensive than Marina di Ragusa on the mooring fees.

Licata is a port with very strong fouling due to the river close by. Haul out will be by mobile crane and you can stay on board and do work yourself.

Marina di Ragusa can lift out a catamaran by Travelift but you cannot stay on board or do any work yourself.

Another possibilty you might want to consider is Malta. Staying on board and working is fine at Manoel Island Yacht Yard.

You can also look at hammamet in Tunisia. I think we are paying something like $3600usd or so for 7 months but not sure as we are inland Balkans right now. We wintered over in Hammett last year and will do the same this winter. We may haul and paint and if so will run down to Monastir to do so.
Also if you are non EU you need to think about Schengren.

I wintered in Ragusa 2011/12 €1000 for seven months for a 14m yacht. Lacata seems to be the latest place in Sicily. Expensive for lifting.

Re: Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

Thanks everyone for the replies. We are leaning towards Ragusa given a lot more people we have spoken to have wintered there. The Marina di Cala del Sole in Licata seems to be nice but very new (i.e. their boat yard is under construction). Tunisia isn't an option for us for several reasons. We are a non-EU boat but have Schengen taken care of via long term visas. The prices are comparable between the two for our Lagoon 380.

Re: Suggestions for Wintering in Sicily?

Stayed in both marinas. Most boats go to Tunisia or Malta to haulout. You can get the bottom painted at Licata. Although you can haulout at Ragusa, few boats due since you cannot stay aboard.
