South West Ireland

It looks as though we may be returning to the 'other' side of the pond next year for a while. I have it in my mind that the SW coast of Ireland may be a good place to base ourselves and the boat.
40 footer, monohull, 1,5 metres draft.
Can't find much info on the web re: liveaboards, marinas, weather etc.

Any info gratefully received thanks.

I bought myself the pilot book "Southern Ireland Cruising Companion" published by Wiley Nautical.

Good long term berths are Crosshaven in Cork Bay, or Kinsale. Kinsale is a great place to spend time, good restaurants and pubs. Further west, facilities get more remote and smaller. Beth and Evans over wintered, I think in Kinsale.

Dingle Marina and town is well worth a visit - lots to do, many boating visitors, good fun.

Kinsale is expensive, Arklow fish harbour cheap berths, Glandore visitor buoy moorings free, and the place is gorgeous. Try In Your Footsteps for information.

I'll be back there Wed myself and have a class at Cork maritime the week after. I can ask around for some places that might be beneficial for you to look up.

Re: South West Ireland

There is a small marina in Cahersiveen - in West Kerry - a beautiful part of the world. Berths may be cheaper by negotiation than Dingle/Kinsale which are pricey options.

I've visited Dingle three times on bicycling vacations...is Fungie still alive?

My family came from Clonakilty in Cork, but it looks a bit thin for water in what passes for a harbour there. Kinsale's a proper harbour as I recall.
