Smir , Morocco

I today heard two interesting comments from a yacht which had just docked in Smir:

1) There is NO diesel available!?

2) The marina is empty!?

Looking forward to learning more about that 'empty' comment. Why?

If you can read (some) French (or use Google translate), there are recent comments on that marina here
Bateaux autour du monde - Sail The World - L'Univers de la grande croisière en voilier - STW
Usually quite reliable...

PS At this moment, the database contains 4123 comments (in French) on 1367 marinas in 106 countries (still growing).

Re: Smir, Morocco

I was sailing instructor in '78 for Holiday Club, located about 2 kms north of M' Diq.
I think on the place where now Kahila Marina is located.
Any case, in '78 we had to go to Tetuan for gas, and in the fishing port of M' Doq we could get sometimes diesel. Although we bunkered mostly in Gib. The difference between now and '78 is unbelievable. I do not recognise anything since the coastline from Cabo Negro to Restinga is completely urbanised. In my time there it was from M' Diq until Restinga completely empty coast with the exception of the summer palace of Hassn II and neighboring Holiday Club. The hinterland was also unspoiled and you could horseback all the way to Tanger through the Rif with here and there tine villages.
We used the fishingport of M'Diq for the mooring of the schooner and the yacht of my friend Alain. Other yachts were hardly visiting.

Quite a difference with today' s situation.

Re: Smir, Morocco

Here is a rough Google translation of the Dec 2011 comment on that site;Marina to the friendly welcome, accurate benefits, some distance away from M'Dicq (6 KM cheap and easy by bus or taxi). Can visit the region (Tetouan) and certainly more comfortable and convenient than M'Dicq and Kibilla (sandbar at the entrance) a little more sud.Possibilité site with large travel lift 60T but prices Spanish (the marina is managed by the same body as that of Marbella). Enjoy refueling of diesel as at 70 € cts / s, it's cheap.
