We HAVE to protect ourselves....when does stupidity and altruism and self preservation coincide when you have a boat load of 20 year old muslims along side?? Just asking?

Please excuse my ignorance but as I'm sailing out of Rhodes for a week in Sept with my son and partner I'm curious as to what is actually going on. As I've chartered a 34' boat I'm not too concerned about being considered a threat or opportunity but it pays to know what's going on

Its too fluid methinks for any prediction that far ahead.. there's rioting at the Macedonian border so its a matter of time before other routes are trafficked..
Apparently you can book a fast boat across the Channel to the UK complete with paperwork for £12K..
Just follow the news.. and be flexible..

Ok, cool. Thanks Boatie. if Macedonia is under pressure then I'd imagine they'll be more likely to push through Albania or along the Greek border? Heading south to get to the Aegean, assuming they're headed for Western Europe, means Rhodes would actually be out of the way.

Good tip on keeping up on the news - best I do that.

In 2015 around a million refugees arrived packed on tiny boats unsuitable for the crossing or number of people being transported. Most of the Greek islands close to Turkey were affected, Rhodes included.

Thousands have drowned over the last few years. I will check numbers later when I have a chance.

In February this year over 2,000 arrived in Rhodes. With the closure of the northern border numbers have plummeted. In the last couple of weeks some islands have reported zero and Rhides has been less affected than the islands further north, so I think your risks of encountering boats in trouble is currently low, but it is still a possibility.

I look in on most of the channels these days.. Aljezera, BBC, RT, CNN, France24.. balance out the perspectives a bit..

Wake up... these are different times... you can pretend that the socialist buffer of Western European post WW2 with American Defense will last forever... but deep down you know.... the Muslims are going to advance because they have 3 kids to every European child ...it's all mathematical... Make sure you can sail to the New World...just in case...

As Boatie says, it's such a fluid situation both on the ground and politically I wouldn't think predicting a month or two down the road is a particularly definite exercise. I can't see the the EU- Turkey deal lasting another month myself, but who knows?
