Sailing and fishing in Croatia

Best winds to you all.
I am sailing in Split region in September 2014. I love to troll a line and catch a fish for sashimi. Any one has experience in fishing in this area?
Could you help me?

Been sailing there couple of years ago. Great sailing, amazing food. Try local octopus dish, great fish in local restaurant as well.
Fishing unfortunately is not great in Adriatic when compared to South Pacific or Caribbean.
Enjoy and have fun

Hi Philip,

You'll enjoy some great sailing and great places but not so much the fishing.
Sailed Croatia for about a year and you can count on one hand's fingers the amount of fish we caught.
My best results were with light coloured lures. Make sure they sink to around 2-3 meters (6-10 feet).
Good luck and enjoy!

Re: Sailing and fishing in Croatia

I am not a fisherman so cannot advise on fishing but very many of the locals in their small boats troll for fish around the coast. Cannot believe so many would do that without catching something. As a snorkeller who spends 10-11 weeks there a year, I know there are lots of fish in the Adriatic.

Great, thanks a lot to all of you. I will try some small lures and jigs. I will let you now the result. I just can't set the sails without a trolling line. Also take $$$, just in case we have to buy fish for the Sashimi!!!!
Good winds
Philip

Re: Sailing and fishing in Croatia

The funny thing though, some years ago while anchored in a little secluded bay on the east side of Hvar, we sat at a restaurant (which was actually the porch of this couple's house) and asked for fish. We see the owner go to the end of his dock with a bucket and rod and no more than 20 minutes later he comes with 4 fish. He asked us if we liked the catch. Of course we said yes.
After eating a great meal, we couldn't resist but ask him: "What would you do if we said no"?
He answered simply:"You would have to wait till I caught some more".

What a stressless way to live.
