Recommendations for Italy

We are planning an Italian charter holiday. We have already sailed the Aeolian Islands and loved them. In deciding out next location we face choices of Tuscany, Naples, Sardinia etc. We would like to hear from any of you with recommendations based on experiences. Thanks.

You should hire captain Francesco Schettino as a skipper. He knows some good sightseeing places around tuscan coast.

I loved Sardinia. At least with an island, you can always find a sheltered anchorage.

Re: Recommendations for Italy

It depends a lot of the period of the year and wether the fact it will be crowdy is important or not for you !
For example, I did the "Sardegna tour" about 7 times (my boat was in Corsica) and I loved it in June or beginning of July, but definitely not the NE coast in August. Some people will prefer the contrary and love the Costa Smeralda !!!
As Pontines islands are concerned, Ponza, Ischia..., till Capri, I would prefer mid april till mid May or September/October.
But if you love the night life, it will be different...
Great sail area indeed !

Re: Recommendations for Italy

You don't state how long you are intending to sail, but assuming it's only 2-3 weeks, I'd say you have the choice of circumnavigating Sardinia (west and south coast interesting, east coast less so, with the exception of the jewel of the Maddalena Islands) or cruising between Tuscany, the Tuscan islands and maybe even the NE coast of Corsica). Unless you want to spend a fair bit of time ashore (e.g Pompeii, Vesuvius etc), there's not much good sailing around Naples. If I were doing it, I'd cruise from the Tuscan coast to Elba (several nice harbours), down to Giglio (once the media scrum has left!), then across to Corsica, winding up in Bastia before crossing back to the mainland.

Details on all the islands and harbours are on the World Cruising Wiki (see link at top of page). Of course, you'll find everywhere packed if you go in high season and will have to arrive early to be sure of a berth. May, first half of June and September are usually the best months for the right combination of weather and lack of crowds.

Don't go between cruise ships and the shoreline.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

To David M, you don't think there is an opportunity for a free fuel top up?:-)

Re: Recommendations for Italy

Hi, read our blog for sardiinia, the Tuscan islands, southern Sicily and Corsica.

Partly a question of how long you have but also whether you like longer passages or three - five hours per day then anchoring or marina.

If sardiinia either castel sardo (north east) with access to bonifacio and the maddalenas, plus parc asinara. Or Cagliari a d see f your can go to Tunisia or up the west coast. If the tuscanislands, charter from portoferraio and explore Elba and capriaia, or go south to (yes) giglio and giannutri. If the latter, make sure your vessel has a LOT of anchor rode on board.

We haven't yet sailed around Naples, but I hear it can be a difficult and expensive coast.instead consider north Sicily with volcanoes and 3000 years of history and lots of anchorages.

Apols for spelling as iPad can be fiddly!
