Over-Wintering in Southern Spain

We have just left Gibraltar and are now looking for a place to spend the winter on our 11 metre catamaran.

We are intending to replace our current canvas cockpit covers with a fibreglass roof and have some stainless steel work done on the yacht.

Here's hoping some of you might be able to recommend a place that has a decent boatyard that would be capable of doing this type of work.

We don't want to go further north than Valencia.

Thanks

Check Almerimar , Almeria, not to close from Gibraltar, plenty of space for a cata, im not sure if the actual travelift can lift your cata, ask for Paolo Marine Services , is a Italian guy, with years of experience, the marina is very well protected from westerly and easterly gales in winter, the main town is not far from the marina, Cheers.

We had stainless steel work done at Almerimar and the quality was great and the cost reasonable.

I was forced into Almerimar in 1979 with a broken ankle. The place was still being constructed, only half a dozen boats there. I hobbled around for a few days until the travel lift was delivered and assembled. My boat was a Prout and was the second boat to be hauled out. Just the two boats for months. Like a desert it was. I spent three month there and I cannot honestly recall how I did the shopping for food. No local shops so I must have somehow got to Almeria but I have no memory of actually going there.

Actually, Almerimar change a lot, new development in the last years take a roll there, new food markets, bars, restaurants, marine chandlerys, shops, etc... also some bus stops for a ride to town, last time ill be there i estimate about 300 or 400 boats docked in the marina , plus some dozens more in the boatyard, not anymore a desert!!! many sailors for european countrys spend the winter there,, 6 years ago i pay for a 61 ft sloop about 20 euros per day, water and electricity included, very cheap in the past, im not sure how expensive is now, but let me tell you something , Almerimar marina is a public marina run for the goverment so the prices are low , private marinas are expensive in the med.Regards..

Almerimar

Hello to everyone and many thanks for all tha advice. Not too sure about 'MARS' though.
We are in almerimar and we like it very much. It is CHEAP 14 euroes a day including water/electric. Lots of cafes and bars/restaurants around this huge marina complex. There is a lot of spaces still available and at present I estimate about 800 yachts here. There is a very active live aboard community and each day a radio net on vhf. Big supermarket with reasonable prices in the complex and further out on a local bus route Hypermarket. We are a 11mt Cat 4.8 mt wide.

What more can I say

Peter

Spending the winter months in Almerimar

Must admit we wish we had carried on sailing into the Med as it was too early to settle down for winter in October! However, we shall be here for at least another month having some work done but then we plan to move on - see thread about sailing in the western Med in February!

Must praise the marineros ans marina staff - they are very conscientious and keep checking the boats are secure before and during bad weather and will respond quickly to requests on VHF Channel 9.

Happy New Year everyone and we hope you have a good time sailing/motoring around the Med
