Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos, Greece

Hi,

We will be coming to the Ionian from the Corinth Canal soon and one of the stops I would like to make is at Shipwreck Bay on Zakynthos before continuing north.

Has anyone anchored there? I haven't been able to find much information so any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jim

It's a little busy during the day . . .

Fun crowds!

That is why we want to anchor there overnight, if that's reasonable.

Jim, I've been there three times. IMO it is best to use Ay Nikolaos and get there very early. Two hours is plenty of time to enjoy the view. Also, don't try to anchor too close. When the big tripper boats come in they don't care AT ALL about you. Stick to the Southern side if possible but tender to the very Northern. Or swim in.

You can anchor in calm weather but I'd suspect a swell.

Thank you Palarran!

That sounds like a perfect plan.

Re: Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos, Greece

Not really an overnighter location. I was anchored a fair way out in the middle when the first big day tripper came to dump their load. Their bow sprit came uncomfortably close to my mast. I'm sure that they probably wouldn't care if they hit another boat and most certainly act like they own the place. I quickly up anchored and anchored on the south side close to the cave.

I suppose if the wind is not coming from the prevailing direction you could anchor over night. You could anchor in the middle and move to the south before the day trippers arrive.

Re: Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos, Greece

Thank you again Palarran,

We followed your advice and sailed over to Shipwreck Bay, arriving before 8 am and had a hour with no one else on the beach except a couple of kayakers who had camped there. When some tour boats arrived we headed back to Tenaya and sailed south along the incredible coast!

We stopped at Limnionas Bay for fantastic snorkeling through water with 30+ meters visibility.

I would recommend that to anyone sailing in the area!

Jim

Very Nice Jim. Glad it worked out. I love that bay. I hope you left a rock on the ship with your name on it. Maybe we will cross paths sometime.

Re: Navagio Beach, Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos, Greece

We visited shipwreck bay this week and like everyone has stated there are no charts. There are a couple of soundings which help. We anchored pretty far from the shore due to the large boulders close to shore and the many day trip boats. We dropped in 15 metres of sand, some weed but great holding. We tendered to shore and had to be careful as we surfed onto the beach with the braking waves. A little scary with cameras and drone

We had planned to stay the night due to days of light winds leading up to our visit but as it got darker the swell started to rise so we headed to the Southern end of Zakynthos and anchored in Keri. Still are great experience and we had the whole beach to ourselves from 4pm. I will post our experience below, hope it helps.
