Levkas to Marmaris in April

Hi all,

We're planning a delivery trip Levkas to Marmaris via Corinth, to leave the boat in Turkey, departing at the end of March. Lots of you seem to have done this trip.

I'm limited by the dreaded annual leave allowance and would appreciate an idea of how long to leave for the Corinth to Marmaris section, allowing a comfortable, say, 30 miles per day, daytime-only mainly.

Any tips on stop-overs and likely weather at that time of year?

Re: Levkas to Marmaris in April

Hi,
We pushed our boat from Mallorca to Ayvalik in April 2006 and had everything from F2 to F8, mainly from the north. Blog of those passages at yotblog.co.UK/yachtswagman.
Cheers
John

Re: Levkas to Marmaris in April

As weather is concerned, 2 links with with the wind roses for march and april.
March - Wind roses for the Ionian and Aegean Seas
April - Wind roses for the Ionian and Aegean Seas

I did sailed twice in April from Cotinth to Turkey and the weather was not fixed (I mean it changes a lot : different directions in the same week). We had rain many times and a few thunderstorms. But it was windy enough for good sailing and little motoring.
It is easy to sail 30 MN per day as you want. You have so many islands and anchorages. It depends what you like, but 15 days will be enough with a security period in case of... But some people will do the same travel in 2 months...
Enjoy it !

Re: Levkas to Marmaris in April

I have done this trip twice in the past 4 years.
From Corinth.head for Aegina ..Poros and then a longish day to Kithnos ,the first of the Cyclades.Avoid Merikha on the west of this island as it can be very uncomfortable ,instead head round the north of the island to Loutra which is very sheltered.
Then on to Finikas at the sw of Siros, and from there Mikonos, avoid the main town and overnight in Ornos bay.
From there it is a straight run to Ikaria.Kirikos is a good stop,a working harbour but has everything you are likely to need.

Next head for Fourni,Lipsi,Leros and Kos where you can moor in the town harbour and do your check out procedure from Greece.

Do not check into Turkey in Bodrum..it is expensive and you will be ripped off.

Head for Datca aand use the guy at Setur tours who has an office on the road behind the harbour. He will do the transit log for you at a reasonable cost.
From there on you can make youyr way to Marmaris.

It can easily be done in 14 days from Corinth to Marmaris. BUT and this is a big BUT.. the weather in March will be very unsettled and you could find yourself stuck anywhere for a day or more. Also if you are time constrained you will miss out some great sailing places.

Fishtail, that is so useful, thank you. We've been wondering about the check-in/out stops. Actually, because we are ending up near Datca, that makes good sense. According to the pilot, we can also check out of Greece in Symi which would be convenient.

That's correct,Symi is a good place to check out as well as Datca, however the main harbour in Symi town gets very crowded in the summer and can be unpleasant. I don't expect that you will have any problem though.(The alternative is to go round the corner to Pedi bay where you can anchor or moor at the small jetty and take the short bus ride over to the town.this is by far the best place to go in the high season)

The port police office is on the south of the harbour, along away from the town centre. You should go there first to check out , and they will then direct to to the passport/immigration office which is about a hundred yards away...as the crow flies! in reality it is a 15 minute walk right round the harbour and is opposite the police ..you then need to return to the police and complete the process. The port police etc are generally very helpful.
A good alternative to checking in Datca is Bozburun, which is a really good sail from Symi, and a very attractive small town. The guy to see there is Saleh, who has his office in the street at right angles to the harbour. Go into Osman's restaurant and ask Osman or Lynn to direct you there. The harbour in Bozburun is very sheltered and has good facilities.( I'm biased it is my favourite place in Turkey!!)
