Laying-Up Costs in the Med?

Considering the purchase of a yacht in the eastern Med and would eventually want to sail it to northern Europe. In case we are to go through with this we would like to sail the yacht 4-5 weeks each summer, progressing at a leisurely pace towards Gibraltar, and lay up the boat somewhere to continue next year.

However, I have absolutely NO idea what the cost of laying up a boat in the Med is like. Would like to do the French canals, but draft is too great for that. The boat in question is 43' long, 12' beam.

We are sailing since 6 months in the Western Med. The prices do vary a lot in function of the marina, if it is a public or a private one. As example in Puerto Portals, close to Las Palmas they asked for our 41' boat some 200€ per day. (we anchored 50 m. from the marina for free!). On average you will pay some 80€ per day in the summer. Now we are in Palau, north of Sardinia, close to the Smeralda coast with its famous marina of Porto Cervo. The rates are calculated on the basis of square meters: length X beam.
November till April: 0,10€ per square meter.
May till October: 0,50€
July and August: 1,20€

Please check out your data. It may be wrong.

Canary Islands are indeeda mixed batch - Las Palmas municipal marina is inexpensive though (if you can stand the notoriously dirty toilets/showers, the cockroaches and the robers).

OP is inquiring about LAYING UP costs, not the cost of anchoring overnight in a marina.....

In southern Spain in Almerimar is was about $300 Euro a month to stay in the water (12.4 meter boat, paid in advance) and less on the hard.
We did not stay in southern Italy, but planned to at Sibari. at approximately the same cost.

Ok with bills in hand , i pay for a lagoon 38 in the marina in las palmas , canary islands about 24 euros per day, in almerimar i dont know right now , but in the past i pay for a 61 ft sloop 13 euros per day include elec and water, in Mallorca Balearic Island the same boat 120 euros per day, in spain the south coast is the cheapest, Almerimar is a good place, Valencia is very expensive now , thanks to the americas cup, and Gibraltar i dont remember, just be for 2 nights time ago.Cheers.

Hi Oyvind,
Possibly best to plan the trip home and give us general indications on where each leg will start / end. We can then with collective knowledge, advise best possible spots in each place and you can call each to ask the exact and current prices.

Some locations are notoriously good value (like most Canary Island marinas) and some very expensive (like Palma).

As a rule of thumb storage ashore is a fraction of berthing costs in a marina and for winter months (assume you'll be on the move in the summer) the rates for berths are low even at many top quality places.

As a further guide, Lagos where we've currently located is 2,900 euros for nine months for a 46 x 14 foot boat. Ashore would be less than 1,500 euros.

The cost per day at the marina of Puerto Portals (200 €: 150 plus VAT, plus electricity, plus water) but it is close to Palma de Majorca and not Las Palmas. Note that the pilot book of Imray mentions that it is one of the most expensive in the Med. Having said this
my friend Manuel paid for his 60 ft. some 620 € for a night at the Royal Club in Palma!

Regarding Lagos John must be a good negotiator as the rates are:

Everybodys missed the OPs question entirely: He wants laying up costs for the med, not berthing costs! (I'm also interested in any responses)

Thanks and yes, as some have pointed out I'm primarily interested in laying up costs, although berthing costs are also of interest. I'm perfectly OK with laying up on the hard, although this begs the question of whether the yard supplies the crib, or am I responsible for supplying one myself?

Whether or not we will go ahead and purchase a yacht in the Med depends very much on the costs of getting it home, although we're willing to extend this over quite a few years as long as it doesn't cost us the first born

The yacht we are currently considering is in Turkey. A rough itinerary would be to perhaps take it over to Greece and lay it up there the first year, next year around to Croatia and explore this area, then Italy, France and Spain. The jumping off point for making some serious progress homewards would probably be the north coast of Spain, cross the Biscay well off shore and then either go through the Channel or up the Irish Sea and around Scotland before we set the final course for our home port of Bergen, Norway.

The trip home could be spread over anything from two to four years, again depending on laying up costs and how much time we want to spend in the Med. Time to spend sailing would be 4-5 weeks every summer.

Quite a few french marinas are public and have no hard standing , but most boatyards have an area that can be used, prices vary are theres a lot of negogiatation. My marina( near nice) runs at about 4K for a 12 metre boat during the winter, thats at a berth and around half ( I've heard of alot less as well) that on hard standing owned by the local boatyard.

the cheapest sailing area in the Med is presently Greece, you do not pay in most harbours or a little only,
however marinas are rare in Greece

beyond Greece I would recommend Turkey, which is more expensive than Greece, however one can find nice anchoring places at least out of the season, the marinas are many and have a good standard

The most expensive areas are: France and Spain, then comes Italy and Croatia, then the rest - to name only the major countries.

I have seen the situation in August 2008 as this:

Port Napoleon is perfect - it is under Dutch management - it can be recommended, everything very clean, all services, in the water and on land, but not very cheap, unfortunately far a way from shops in Port St. Louis.

Navy Service is one of the dirtiest places I have ever seen, it is not a marina, it is only a "land storage" place, the place in the water is only for launching, there were only two dirty toilets for about 700 boats, it is not a place to stay, most people there leave their boat only over the winter time or for self repairing, service there very professional - however the cheapest place in the whole area.

An alternative to the two above mentioned is the small marina directly in Port St. Louis, all facilities nearby.

I would try to think about Turkey and Israel. Finike Marina in Turkey is cheap arround 180 EU per month and Marina Asdod in israel is arround 190 EU per month. the locals are friendly, and both Marinas mentioned have Travel lift with considerable reduction on LIFT-AND-STAY. prices. all spares are available. climate is ok , arround 30 in the Summer, arround 15 in the winter. we have been arround here for many years.... feel free to ask more .
