Trying to answer the original question, it does depend on where you end up each season, but also on whether you want to visit the boat over the winter - eg use it as your 'holiday flat' for weekends etc. If you were to do that, you'd want to be somewhere interesting, and you'd probably want to be afloat. So - for our 12m boat currently in Rome,for six months,that's 2,400 euros including elec.

The inclusion of electricity is key if you are spending any time aboard, as it will quickly mount up if you pay marina prices for fridge etc.

By contrast, if you go somewhere, haul out and come back in 10 months, then you can get your prices down to about 1000 euros for six - nine months, but there are two things to consider. Firstly is security, both in terms of boat stands (as far I've ever seen universally provided by the yard in Europe) and of the yard itself.

Secondly is whether you are allowed to or wish to either sleep aboard or work on the boat. At the very least you will need to have the boat anti-fouied every year, so in looking at yards you need to assess whether you can do this work, while being aboard for a few days, or will have to pay them, plus any hotel fees. This can make a huge difference to an apparently good value on-the-hard deal.

You say you are meandering west from Turkey to Gib, and not using the canals, so you may not wish to go north towards southern France etc. (Though we found the Riviera an excellent and good value cruising ground) In that case, the debate about Port Napoleon and Navy Service is irrelevant because you will be interested in Malta, southern Italy, Balearics, maybe Tunisia or Morocco. In any case, the situation will evolve over the next few years and new harbours will be offer facilities.

In summary, if you allowed 2500 euros in today's prices for out of water storage plus the minimum works, it should be a generous estimate.

Hi Roaring Girl... Is that EURO rate to keep a 12M vessel in the Rome area per month or for six months? Is it near public transporation ? How far from Rome ? Just curious as someday I would like to layover there for a few months in a Catamaran... That seems pretty cheap to what I have been able to find on the net... Thanks...

Re Turkey - we spend one winer in Kemer and they have many boats ashore. Nearest airport is Antalya. They provided cradles. Suggest best to email for current prices as they changed owners and things will have changed. There is a new marina further west at Alanya that being new - is sure to have lower prices. Negotiate HARD in Turkey.

No personal recommenation on Greece location but sure others can assist for somewhere close by Athens.

Re Croatia recommend you to check out ACI marinas upriver from Dubrovnik as they do have standing space and it is not a place to misss.

No personal recommendation for Italy but I am told it is much cheaper than Croatia for land storage. Have family working in sailing on E coast if you want more info on Grosetto / Punta'la..

Suggest you forget Balearics - Almerimar seems most popular for low cost ease of access on E Spanish seaboard.

Recommend Sopromar Yard at Lagos on Portuguese Algave. Faro nearest airport.

Multiple storage ashore behind marinas in Spanish Rias before you head off to Biscay.

A majority of the above speak good English so go google and then email each for exact prices.

Rome price is for six months 1/10 to 31/3, for 12m yacht in the water, electricity included. On 1/4, prices rocket! (so all fingers crossed for a nice breeze to take us nort to Elba that day, please oh Neptune...).

The actual marina is Porto Turistico di Roma at Ostia. You will read words of swell but so far, although we have found it can be blowy, it's not too bad. We've certainly known worse. Even the ferry at Toulon was often quite bouncy, for example. The facilities are v good (except the washing machine which is slow and expensive), and the security is very good.

It's a bus and train to central Rome, maybe 40 minutes to Termini. Rome travel is very cheap - an all day ticket is 4EU which would get you there and back. Depending on your interests you might combine this with one of the tourist cards with bus routes or entrance to museums. Ostia itself has good markets and food shopping and hardware stores etc. A bicycle is useful but not essential. There's car hire in the marina or (cheaper) at Fiumicino airport. You need Rome because it's Rome, not to actually buy anything. (Although there's a lot of lovely stuff to buy if your bilges have room for handbags, shoes, pictures ....)

There are several liveaboards in the marina, though the Americans have tended to go home for Xmas. Because each pontoon has separate security it's not always easy to meet everyone, and there's not, at the moment, a big hang-out/classes/social mix going on. I gather there has been in other years.

The marina is completely used to liveaboards and very relaxed about it. There is winter space available at the moment. It is cheaper and vastly preferable to any of the spots in the Tiber, which are boat warehouses with no living facilities at all. However, if you were hauling out and leaving the boat, the river is probably cheaper if you can get a space. (I don't know anything about the Fiumicino canal so can't comment about the yards/marinas there.)

The nearest airport is Fiumicino, easily reached by bus from Ostia. There is also Ciampino which is a nightmare journey from Ostia. This has proven slightly annoying for us as the UK airport we most wish to use is only accessible from Ciampino, but we have chosen to use Fiumicino instead and manage the inconvenience at the UK end!
