La Coruna

Well we have made it to La coruna in North west Spain, we are heading towards the med, any suggestions of where to stop next? maybe an over nighter or long day sail to the next port of call.

Re: La Coruna

baiona is a nice stop, you can anchor just past the marina for free.
plenty of remote anchorages further up the ria in sheltered waters.

Re: La Coruna

Go to Portosin in the Ria de Muros just a few miles south of Cape Finisterre, nice marina or anchor off the marina entrance in the shelter of the breakwater.

In Portugal:
- Figueira da Foz
- Povoa do Varzim
- Leave out Leixoes.
- Cascais.

The various rias north of Bayona are worth a visit. But beware of at least one National Park where you need a permit to anchor.

Once in Portugal anchoring becomes difficult but do-able on the west coast:
- In sheltered weather anchor off the east side of Isla Berlinga.
- Off the entrance to Cascais marina.

Great trip coming, try the Islas Cies off Vigo which are 2 islands connected by a crescent beach.Shelterd anchorage, good walking espescially up to the top of the High Island.history as well as the southern one was a pirate hang-out for the returning galleons. Enjoy,David & Chrissy s/y Shady lady

Re: La Coruna

Unless you are hard pressed for time I would spend at least two weeks in the rias between A Coruña and Baiona - there are countless nice anchorages there.

Beware when heading out from Baiona as the area is known for sudden appearance of fog.

Food in Galicia seems better than further down the road, until you reach France, enjoy it while you are there.

I agree with the thought to slow down and enjoy Galicia. Call into Santiago de Compestella, after sailing to A Corunna you've earned the right. A further recommendation is Camaranas for a stop on your trip south and before entering the Rias proper. I know that there will be an urge to take advantage of any settled weather, but after making it into the med and having seen a lot more of the Spanish coast, I think that I can say, that your probably in the best cruising ground Spain has to offer.

Re: La Coruna

Try the World Cruising Wiki (see link at top of page) for info on the harbours of Spain and Portugal. Apart from the Rias (which would be a crime to miss out on), the rest of N. Spain and Portugal is pretty well covered down to Gibraltar.
