Julian Mustoe (82) rescued in the North sea

Writer and sailor Julian Mustoe was rescued from his sailboat yesterday , suffering from a broken rudder. The boat sank during a towing atempt by the norwegian coast guard.

I'm glad he's safe. But seriously... 82 years old, singlehanded, in the North Atlantic, in October, on a 29' boat? Not the best of situations to say the least.

category4jay,

Well, it WAS the boat that broke, not the man.

To some extent, I think you will admit that if the fellow is a fit 82, and an experienced sailor, the forethought and planning that such folks show allows them to prepare well for the wx. Plus, it wasn't January, only Oct.

What say the others?

Ann

I thought he showed great fortitude. It's a great shame that his boat was lost while under tow towards Norway.

Ann T. Cate,
You're absolutely right. I don't want to take anything away from this man. In fact I admire him tremendously for just being out there. I suspect he is a good sailor and is probably fit for his age. He also probably weighed all the variables very carefully before he sailed. But was that decision to sail a good one given all the variables? Im curious what others have to say as well. Thanks.

nigel1,
I agree it is indeed a great shame he lost his boat under tow. I would like to know more about how that happened but we will probably never know. Apparently she started taking on water while in-tow. Seaworthiness? Again we will never know.

Im glad the man is safe. BTW he does look pretty good for being 82. I just hope I GET to be 82.

Re: Julian Mustoe (82) rescued in the North sea

My friend, David Clark completed his solo circumnavigation at 76, 13 or more years ago and is still fit and doing other things. So what is the problem? The oldest recorded active scuba diver is 92. Age is secondary to condition. There are a lot of people in their 40's, 50's 60's and 70's who are not fit to cross the street alone, but there are a lot who are fit enough to continue. Why consider his age if he is competent and fit to continue. He did not break, his boat broke under tow. That should say something to the nay sayers.

I agree it was the boat and not the man that broke, kinda the opposite of what normally happens. Hope he gets a new boat and continues sailing until he no longer feels like it!

If the fellow is in fair shape, then why not? We likely all know of another person of 82 who can be as fit/strong/mentally aware as someone 30 years younger.

A 29ft boat being towed by a boat or ship exeding the 29 footers hull speed , will damage , or destroy it no problem .As for the man's age , give me a break , there are people out there half his age , that can afford the vesels they buy , but haven't got a clue , and have to be rescued , money , but no commen sense .

Re: Julian Mustoe (82) rescued in the North sea

Quoting the BBC article posted in a links above:

He said: "I have got my Visa card, chequebook and passport but everything else has gone to the bottom of the sea.

"What I'm going to do with myself, I don't know. I confess that I'm beginning to think my luck has run out."

So, no doubt we would all feel as great a sense of loss.

If you follow the link at the end of the article to Mr. Mustoe's website, there you will find this link to his e-book, available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Voyage-Harri.../dp/B00VRRS9W6

Sounds like an interesting voyage; the relatively low cost of the e-book won't cause regret downloading it to find out...YMMV

What a heart breaker. This guy now has nothing? Only his passport, visa and checkbook. Damn shame. I hope somehow he can get another boat.

That's was my first thought, but I didn't know.

I think they were taking it pretty easy on the tow, these guys are used to towing small yachts in heavy seas.

Re: Julian Mustoe (82) rescued in the North sea

I deeply admire the man and curse his misfortune with the vessel. PraiseGod he was rescued.

Said rescue compels me to ask:Who pays for the rescue? Is the sailor responsible for all costs?

Only 3 years ago Mustoe completed a voyage following in the wet prints of the Beagle. A map is below. Oh and yes, he solo circumnavigated. So he does have some sailing experience and I rather suspect knows what he's doing.

If you'd like to help him out, do something tangible and buy his books. They're great reads about amazing sailing trips to some very exotic places.

And to answer an earlier question sea rescues are free in all countries by international convention.

A sad end to a cruiser's boat that had taken him so far (circumnavigation).

Noteworthy to me as another example of a loss of boat due to "loss of steering."
