Re: Ionian Sea

We use Windguru (paid version) in the Ionian. The 9km WRF is best. It was the only forecast (including Poseidon) that forecast the 60knots and storms we had in early October off the Albanian Coast near Vlore.
Luckily we went into Orikum Marina and weathered the storm there.

Poseidon is good and should be viewed daily. Very useful in the Agean.
In the Ionian it will give a general idea but a lot of the weather is very local and greatly influenced by the mountains and local sea breezes as they heat up.

We use a Vodaphone dongle, to connect a lap top, approx 20 euro for 15 days. We can then also get full internet connection for e mails etc. We can also watch uk tv on line. Vodaphone shops are easily found in most ports

Enjoy the Ionian. The Gulf of Corinth is worth a visit. Not so crowded and some stunning scenary.

This year the harbours department were doing a lot of construction work along the edges of the north end of the Levkas canal. This might mean that that the risk of grounding might be reduced.

Yes they have had a very serious amount of work for the last two years.
I have known the area for some time, and know that they work on it every year.
But as I often say you can not fight nature. Serious Northerly winter gales will always cause silting problems.

Once you have entered the canal and know it it is fine. But approaching from the N for the first time, with a good breeze behind you is a bit of "Buttock Clencher"!

Re: Ionian Sea

I guess it all depends on draft. I have made that canal three times on the last years and never had a problem with a draft of 2.30m.

The only part that can cause some concern is the entrance on the North side but the Greeks had always maintained a decent depth at least in the summer. On that part (entrance) the bottom is sand so it is not really a problem, just go carefully finding out where is the deepest part. On the deepest part the minimum depth is around 3m.
