Re: In or out of the EU, how will it effect the boating community.

Certainly the EU will enforce the strictest of Visa requirements on the british after the Brexit - many European hope. We are sick and tired of an EU member that has been demanding all sorts of privileges for more than 30 years, not willing to contribute anything. Has always reminded me of a three year old.

Certainly true, but how are they ever going to pay their Euro based debt?

The Dutch people aren't too happy with the EU, and not only are many of us in favor of a Brexit, we're also in in favour of a Nexit. At least, if I'm to believe the polls, nearly half the people are ready to flat out vote "out" right now.

Having said that, I think the referendum will keep the UK in. And the Dutch won't even get one, even tho more and more citizens are asking for one.

But just so you won't get your hopes up: there won't be much of an effect on the boating community if there is a Brexit, which is what this topic is about

If the UK is the first Domino.. Greece, Spain, Portugal and a few of the newcomers who've had refugees dumped on them by Mama Merkel.. will be quick to follow..
Who's gonna play debt collector.. Germany and France?? don't make me laugh

Funny huh... Spain, Greece and Portugal get crucified because the 'Wankers Crash' wrecked their economies..
While the UK gets crucified for a successful economy...

The UK has been told it must pay an extra £1.7bn (2.1bn euros) towards the European Union's budget because the economy has performed better than expected in recent years.

The payment follows new calculations by the EU that determine how much each member state should contribute.

It would add about a fifth to the UK's annual net contribution of £8.6bn.

A government source said the demand was "not acceptable" while one Tory MP said the UK should simply refuse to pay it.

Funny that the UK's increase equals Germany, France and Austria's reduction.. and folks say its not a 'Club'.??

Re: In or out of the EU, how will it effect the boating community.

In 2014, Britain paid 76.6 Euro per Citizen net (after deducting the EU payments to Britain). Finnland paid 148.4, Denmark 148.8, Germany 191.9, Sweden 239.8, and the Netherlands paid 279.9. Quite a substantial discount for a member that claims to be one of europe's strongest.

I'm not understanding how it's relevant to calculate how much is paid per citizen? As far as I know, fees are mainly based on VAT and GNI.

Because it shows how much more e.g. the Netherlands contribute in relation to the size of the country. And how little the brits contribute. Or am I mistaken and the british economy is really performing that poorly?

The size of a country has nothing to do with the number of citizens. The number of citizens has little to do with fees paid to the EU.

So no, I still fail to see how your calculation makes any sense.

Let me put it this way.
Let's say I'm a member of a club that calculates its fees based on income:

I'm single and based on my $500k income, I'll have to pay $ 50,000
Another member has a family of 4 and a $50k income, his fee is $ 5,000
I'm paying $50,000 per person, the other guy only $ 1,250.
He has a bigger family so more people benefit from his membership, yet he pays far less then me! How is that fair?

Fees to the EU are mostly just that: a percentage of VAT and GNI. And part depends, among other things, on negotiations between individual members and the EU. If you feel your country did badly at the negotiating table, don't blame the UK for that but whomever was doing the negotiating for your country.

The stupidity and waste of money that is CAP is a very understandable reason for the UK to want "privileges" and of course there are many other acts of stupidity legislated by the EU parliament that it is understandable the UK does not want part of.

If they want to get rid of EU stupidity they will know how to vote. Very few will be sorry if they leave.
