At night I'll use the head rather than traipse up to the ablution block. My holding tank is for emergencies only. My marina has an average tidal range of 3.5m to wash things away. Thankfully we are upstream of the main sewage plant, which pongs abobominably at times, usually of detergents.

I regularly see an otter, swiming through the marina, so I guess the water quality is pretty good.

I can't see holding tanks getting much use in France. They have a much more robust attitude to poo.

If something comes out of this thread is that many that have holding tanks on their boats rarely use them and that the several states that forbidden the dishware of any **** on territorial waters are not taken seriously.

When the RCD, more then 10 years ago, made mandatory the installation of holding tanks on cruising boats they assumed sailors would use them. Since it was not the case (with many users) the RCD has been changed:

"Any toilet fitted in a recreational craft shall be connected solely to a holding tank system or water treatment system."

That means now everybody has to use the holding tank since a Y connection is forbidden. No direct connection from the head to the sea.

I hope this will better the situation because if the situation of disposing of **** on marinas or near the shore will continue the next steep is obvious and it will be a self contained boat with the holding tank only being emptied by a pumping station facility. Then it would be very difficult to pollute the water with ****.

I really hope that they don't need to go that far to assure that all kip their **** away from the shores, but that is not up to them but to cruisers that have already the means to do that ....and in many cases refuse to do so.

I noticed the mistake but no way to correct after some time. Obviously I meant to say discharge and I guess most would have understood. Yes you are correct: bad use of auto spell.

RCD means Recreational Craft Directive: All boats built or sold on Europe have to be built according a long set of rules that are expressed on the RCD.

This is a truly disgusting habit, not to use their holding tank if they have it, or worse still not to have a holding tank at all. Some countries are catching up and making it mandatory to have and to USE IT.

Kenomac, as a contributor to this thread, has an Oyster 53 which I know having owned one for about 6 yr, has it fitted as standard. But do these guys use their holding tanks or simply let their **** drift down in an anchorage onto others below them who think they are swimming in charmingly clear water. Until they see a turd floating by. Truly disgusting.
