Hard Standing in Ireland

Hello. I'm now planning on heading across to Ireland this summer(July) as the tax situation in Norway is now prohibitive! if someone can tell me who to contact regarding leaving the boat on the hard over the winter 2011/12 I would appreciate it. Also some harbours and yards where it would be reasonable to lay the boat up. Thanks Noel

I have no precise information. However, I would begin with looking here: In Your Footsteps

Try hegartys boatyard in Baltimore west Cork or crosshaven both very secure and reasonable crosshaven is nearer to the airport and Cork City. But Hegartys will work out cheaper, facilities are minimal, but they will look after you boat and is an hour bus trip from the airport.

Re: Ireland.

Malahide Marina north of Dublin is a good bet.

Re: Ireland.

I would say your best bet would be a place in Cork or Cohb. Very sail friendly from my experience down there so far.

Re: Ireland.

Hi All
Was sitting in an airport using my iphone to register and post a message for the first time yesterday. Here's a bit more information. There are umerous marinas and boatyards available to choose from in the area. The more expensive, but still reasonably priced will be in Crosshaven south of Cork City and a short distance from Cork Airport. Further west, there is Kinsale and Baltimore. For access and facilities I would go with Crosshaven, but my heart is in Baltimore. The Guinness tastes better overlooking the harbour.
Regards Joe

The problem of west cork is that road access is poor. If you intend to visit the boat over the winter then a Marina near the major cities is best. There's good transport links from east/SE coast conurbations and also to cork. The SW of Ireland is a nice cruising ground but obviously only if you intend going to the SW

Re: Ireland.

Many people use "Ireland" rather generically but to most in the UK it means only southern Ireland. Nonetheless Carrickfergus marina is less than 10 miles from Belfast and its hard standing charge is £1 per metre per month.

Carrickfergus Borough Council - Tourism - Marina - Berthing Charges

As an aside
The official name of " southern Ireland" is Ireland. (see UN and UK 1922 government
of Ireland act ) ( sorry I'm a bit of a history buff. )

I know what you mean, but since when do people do things the "right way"? Since I'm originally from Northern Ireland I'm well used to people calling the whole island Ireland, including the North. In some parts of Belfast failing to make the distinction between Ulster and Ireland can be injurious to your health

You two will be counting the number of counties in Ulster next

Kalinka, could you be a bit more specific about were you would like to lay up over the winter? Also note the climate is will be completely different so the need to lift out for a winter isn't essential as the temperature rarely goes below zero, certainly nothing like Norway.

Mintyspot makes a good point about airports for transport which you should also consider.

You've obviously been on mars rather then experiencing the last two winters then. Both the UK and Ireland had hellishly cold winters recently. And we regularly get periods of below zero weather.

Do cats get spots?

Oh no.... not more vikings invading the Emerald Isle. They only come for the beer because it is so much cheaper over here. The last time they emptied the off-licences and distilleries and haven't been back for 1200 years. Presumably they are still drinking the last haul...

I wonder if I can train the cat to act as a guard cat and keep my whiskey safe?

If Kalinka1 did stop in Carrickfergus, there is a railway line direct to Belfast City Centre and a very short bus journey to George Best Airport or an Express Coach to Belfast International which takes less than an hour.
