Re: Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS

I still think many summer holiday only visitors, such as the Italians, will stay away. Why pay to cruise the Ionian when there are many other cruising grounds close by that cost nothing.

Time will tell. But at least it is a glimmer of light for the larger boats that haul, cruise, haul anyway.

Re: Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS

It's sort of the same everywhere. If your boat is IN THE WATER for 90 days in florida you technically have to register it here and maybe pay tax.

If it's in a boatyard the 90 days doesn't apply. Also similar rules in French Polynesia and in New Zealand they have you pay a bond that earns interest if you need to store a foreign boat long term.

Nice the boatyard owners get some consideration for all the property taxes they pay.

DUH Atoll and NornaBiron, of course you are right... While I was well aware that northern Cyprus is under Turkish Rule and southern Cyprus is not I was under the delusion that part of the island was in some way governed by Greece. I stand corrected. (And to think that we are neighbours )

Anyhow that is definitely good news. Thanks.

now maybe this is greek logic but i simply don't get it - big boats pay less than small boats
I do beleive from my contacts that people are misinterpreting the > 12m clause.

We shall see later this year as the rukes are clarified .

That's interesting as you will no doubt pass through greek waters to get from one to the other!

That's one of the things the Cruising Association is lobbying for, quoting the right of innocent passage. It's understandable you'd have to pay the tax if you entered port (unless it was an emergency), but what if you just anchored everywhere en route? I know what the Article says, but there's a tenable argument that it may conflict in certain respects with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It's just one of the numerous aspects of this new tax that is still awaiting interpretation.

You would/should be taxed... your making use of 'facilities'.. and depriving someone who is paying the tax of an anchorage space..

Essentially if you anchor , other then as a result of a force majure, you are not on innocent passage

Since Greece has confirmed you will pay the tax along with getting either the DEPKA or transit log , I beleive they do not intend to collect taxes if you never a port or anchor off one.

The Ministry of Maritime has confirmed to the Cruising Association (CA) that it has no intention to require vessels on passage through Greek waters to pay the tax. For those who anchor on passage, they say they will take a strict view of the UNCLOS provisions.

We don't intend to anchor or use their ports. What would they do come out and arrest us?

If you are underway in open water I guess no, just as they wouldn't bother a cargo ship clearly on passage. On the other hand if one of their patrol boats came across you close in and suspected you of dropping anchor to spend the night they might board and at the very least and give you a hard time. Passage is not a slow cruise!

As it has been pointed out earlier in this thread there are people that already abuse the situation in Greece by abandoning their boats on a quayside for weeks and months on end and pay nothing for the benefit.

If this tax is deemed to be wrong, and not everyone contributing to the thread believes it to be so, simply trying to dodge payment is neither a solution nor fair on fellow cruisers that do pay it.

I personally believe it will be more harmful to the local economy, bringing in less money than people would otherwise spend direct. This is only my opinion.
But as much as I might disagree I will be paying my dues when in their water.

Re: Greek Tax! - MERGED 4 THREADS

If a few more 'rich' Greeks paid taxes then they wouldn't have to re-tax other europeans who have already been paying there taxes just to pull Greece out of the hole it's in...

I don't think anyone posting here will argue with that!
