Crossing Russian Sea Area in Eastern Gulf of Finland

We are thinking about sailing across from Eastern Finland to Narva or one of the other Eastern Estonian ports. The Russian sea area sticks way out into the Gulf of Finland here. Not all of our crew have Russian visas, so we don't want to clear into Russia. Anyone have any practical experience with innocent passage across this area, or do you have to go all the way around?

Check the latest Sailing Directions, and then consider:

* is your course a customary navigation course?

* is the course a shipping lane shown on Russian charts?

* what is the nearest Russian port authority?

* contacting the nearest Russian embassy or consulate?

Go around mate, any country wherein the ruling class makes up a significant portion of the criminal element must include a certain number of pirates within that ruling class.

the finnish around you probably have the best hands on experience.
in the current climate i would not risk anything.
US and Russian embassy just had 2 diplomats (each) expelled in Moscow/Washington over some incident in Moscow a few weeks ago.

I will of course, but wanted to see if there was anyone with concrete and recent experience.

By the way, GULAG ("Glavnoe Upravlenie Lagerei" -- Main Administration of the Camps) was disbanded in the 1950's.

The question was not about clearing into Russia. It's done it without help and it's really no problem.

I can't clear in because we're not going to Russia - just needed to pass through their waters. Now heard from a few sources that you can't in that particular place.

the problem is not clearing in, the problem is that 90% of the shore/islands is off limits to civilians and they can get really pissy if you mess up even a little and there is a language barrier.

Edit: well maybe not 90% but you get the idea.

Yeah, you don't want to be where you're not supposed to be in those parts.

I was snowmobiling in Russia years ago with a Russian friend. We were doing hard bashing around in the wilderness, not the way you go snowmobiling back home on prepared trails (they use long track mountain sleds). We passed through some particularly difficult terrain and found ourselves -- right in the middle of military base which did not appear on the maps. We couldn't go back the way we came (we had skipped across a river and gone up a hill too steep to go back down -- there was no fence I guess because the terrain was considered impassable). It was a real brown shorts moment. The only way out was through the main gate. Without much time to think, we just kept riding and went right out the main gate as if we belonged there. I saluted the guard as I rode past. He saluted back. I guess some of the officers rode snow machines (it was a fabulous place for it). We bombed back across that river as fast as we could, in case they got second thoughts about checking our i.d.'s. I'd probably still be locked up to this day if it had turned out differently. In those days (pre-Google Earth) it was illegal to have fine scale maps, and I had a whole pack of them. That plus an American passport -- it would have been ugly.

Sorry for the thread drift, but that brought back memories
