US and Russian embassy just had 2 diplomats (each) expelled in Moscow/Washington over some incident in Moscow a few weeks ago.
Some time ago my friend crossed the border without permission, and ended up in a jail in Vyborg before being sent back. Times may have changed a bit since then, but I would not try inventing new routes through their territorial waters (or military areas). If they feel like it, you might end up being a good example of a western spy threatening Russia.

If you are flying the stars and stripes, would go around. Things are fairly tense right now; especially with Putin purging his top navy brass for not being hard asses to American vessels. Suspect now might be when they really start being mean to any American boat, legally or illegally in their territorial waters.

I'm flying the Red Duster, but I'm not sure that's really any better.

I almost got run down by a Russian tanker sailing into Vyborg two years ago, he ran me right out of the channel and almost onto the rocks -- obviously intentional. Scared the **** out of me.

But this is not indicative -- both people and officials in Russia continue to be very friendly despite the political tension. Clearing customs in Vyborg a few hours after the incident named above was a breeze; both customs and immigration people exceptionally nice and helpful.

DH, if you can speak their lingo and find right people to talk to..... that's the way to go! With all tensions atm in the Baltic Sea, I would be very careful! Very unpredictable bunch today! Their waters reach out to Finnish Gulf quite far west, inline with Kunda Bay Estonia to Pyhtaa Finland! If you hear words 'ruki vehr' you are in wrong waters ⛵️

Dockhead, if you speaks Russian, call directly to Granit on VHF, or +7(812)406-81-22 - border crossing point at fort Konstantine,St.Petersburg. They will tell you what to do.
