Considering Kastelorizo (Greece) who knows it ?

We are leaving soon from western Cyprus bound for Greece - was told last night about using Kastelorizo as a staging point - the most easterly part of Greece.

have not found much about it on the nets... all comments greatfully received.

if approaching from the south or east watch out for the reefs/rocks about 2 miles off shore.

you can anchor in the bay,but will be asked to move when the ferry comes in 2/3 times a week.
not the best holding, but you can tie stern too on the south side of the village in front of the tavernas in 2-3 m where it is not nessacary to move.

reasonable protection from north west, but any thing with east in it you will want to leave immediatly.
possable to get water and small quantities of fuel with difficulty.
2 or 3 shops selling basic provisions, and an atm, post office ,wifi at some of the restaurants.

airstrip with flights from rhodes a few times a week.

otherwise a friendly place and picturesque, though weather is a consideration early season if you have se,e or ne winds,as you will need to leave asap.

We anchored there and stayed 3 nights. Lovely little place. IF you hav a DEPKA allready then you can check in and out there at the port police.

it would be best to anchor around the corner as there is lots of room and it is a nice sandy bottom. Took well in. Then dinghy round to the ferry dock and tie up at the end clear of all the boats.

Hi Peter , this possibility was only mentioned to us last night - so all is new - this will be our first Greek stop - I presume we will be able to get a DEPKA there - we will be in transit to Corinth.
FOOTPRINTS is almost ready to go :-)

i would not reccomend using the outside anchorage so early in the season, fine during the meltemi but very dangerous in east winds that are more common till may.

port captain can do all your transit logs but generally turn a blind eye to uncleared boats coming from turkey

Hi Kris,

Unfortunately they do not issue the depka there and they will tell you that you will have to go to RHODES to get one.

It is such a small Island and quite remote, so they dont realy get many people checking in or out. It was our last port of call before we sailed to the TRNC.

I suppose Rivonia is right because he knows very well this area.
Just to say Noonsite says it is a port of entry :
Kastelorizo — Noonsite

I would say, it doesn't matter... You will enjoy Kastelorizo anyway.

Re: Considering Kastelorizo (Greece) who knows it ?

Hi krissteyn...
we visit Kastelorizo regularly ,and would definitely recommend it as a place to stop for a day or two.
However I don't know what it will be like at this time of year...probably very quiet!
You definitely won't have a problem finding a place to moor up at this time ..the holding is good in the main town harbour. There is a port policeman in attendance during the summer but last time I spoke to him, he said that he would be heading back to the mainland at the end of October and there would not be anyone on duty until the spring, so it would seem to be unlikely that you will be able to obtain a DEKPA at the moment. As others have said,be careful of the rocks and islets around the approaches.
Keep an eye out for the turtles who frequent the harbour!

FEEDBACK
We had a good stay , the place was empty and the locals pleased to see us - weather was a little gusty and the only safe place was tucked in on the far corner , tied off longside with fore and aft springers/lines and all the fenders out. The Coastguard recommended where we were and we felt quite safe. good choice for us and we will go back.

Now in Symi - also good altho a bit more rolly, and next stop might be Marathon or Corinth.

cheers and thanks for the info Kris

Re: Considering Kastelorizo (Greece) who knows it ?

The paperwork was quite a long winded affair... I just shrugged and said "what must I do ?" and they rallyed around and I went back and forth till all was done - transit clearing out was quite easy.

The police had a problem with the computer and I sat around for 10 minutes while they "re-connected" , but were friendly and helpfull.

Curiously, my wifes child has her previous's last name , so is a 10 year old travelling with "other" adults. Cyprus insisted on a visual and a question to the young man before they were satisfied. Greece has ignored all that so far.

We leave Symi in the morning with hopefully good sailing weather - diesel aint cheap !
