Our experience is that if you try to speak French they will quickly realise:

a. You have at least made an effort

b. That it would be quicker if they speak English

Are you using Google Chrome as a web browser? it works along side Internet Explorer quite happily, but it will offer you the option to translate a French website into English for you, which I find useful.

I have sendt of some mails to marinas in France but getting no return mails.
i did write in english.

In general you are wasting your time writing in English. They will more then likely talk to you over the phone.

I think, as a french born in Brittany and having had a sailboat in Saint-Malo for 10 years, I agree with Goboatingnow : "In general you are wasting your time writing in English".... Not sure it will be better by phone, mostly at this season (low)... No particular problem with Safari (I use it now for this answer)... Maybe can use a web translator to send new emails and ask at what time you may call to have some anglophone online.

Not entirely sure what your plans are. But if you are looking for somewhere to tuck your boat away for a little while I suggest the Marina at Plouer sur Rance (St Malo, up past the Barrage).

Downside is that as such a quiet place that the Marina office not always open - so don't get too fazed by no contact.



The only thing that occurs to me the width of entrance..........for a Cat.

It's a 20 min taxi ride to St Malo (trains to Renne which go to Paris) / Dinard (small airport - don't know where it connects to. apart from Jersey )

Deauville Marina, Visitors pontongs, is that a good place to stay for some weeks. ?

Hi Careka,
Sounds like you're getting lots of good advice and will enjoy the trip.
One further tip if you like music / beer / vino, is to take a day out to stop by up river at Tréguier (N Brittany) on any Wednesday.
That day of the week the town has a lively open market up around the old Cathedral square and after dark at least in July / August - it transforms into a music / dance festival well worth taking time to get to. If you've any Celtic blood in you, you'll find the atmosphere electric.
Also at St Quay they have an international Celtic music festival in early August. if you like this style of music (and some great fireworks) again - IMHO well worth being there.
If you want a cheap place to leave the boat and trust your anchor, then it is possible to drop it in the river just below the town and park with no charge.....I'm sure the marina Captainaire would keep an eye on it for you if away for a while.

i am pure Viking, goes back in the books(fam tree) to year 1030.
and we like a party. so thanks, we do bring to off the kids girls 13,17, the oldest dont want to come anymore so not full speed on partys, and i am getting older, but music is always nice.
I dont mind paying a bit if i know the boat is safe, when i am not onbord.
stay at anchor when i am onbord is what we like.
When we get back to the boat in June, we will go north.
Do the channels in Holland, Freisland, Kiel kanal and then up Danish cost/sweden and back home the the lovely south west cost of Norway.

Hi Careka,
Trebeurden is nice, but tight to swing a 38 Lagoon around. I suggest on the N Brittany coast you'll find St Malo the biggest facility - but usually busy in summer. The next largest is St Quay which has the bonus of 24 hour access plus a British Harbour Master.
