Azores to Cuxhaven

Cuxhaven is next door to Bremerhaven. Has anybody made the passage to there from the Azores? I plan to perhaps do it double handed on a 40-ft. sloop late next July 2011 into August via the English Channel. Any tips, weatherwise, temperatures, distances, ports, shipping traffic, etc.? Sailed double handed with the same fellow from Cape Town to Salvador Brazil last Nov. into this Jan. and we had a great time.

I'm an American expat living in Bremen, which is next door to Bremerhaven. Ive been to Cuxhaven many times and that area of the North Sea can be very unforgiving. The tides are what to watch out for. In Cuxhaven during low tide you can walk about three miles offshore. Many ships ran aground there and navigation is tough because of container ship traffic. A lot of it. Fair winds!

Azores to UK is a matter of choice really... some like to leave Terciera for Finisterre then head across the Biscay... better winds... then you get people like me who try to do it direct... Horta to Poole 30days... 10 days no wind, 12 days F3 and less... distance around 1550 miles.
My friends who chose the Finesterre route did it in 14 days... go figure
Once in the Channel its a decision for you... French or English coasts... personally I'd choose UK... not so many rocks...lol

Hard to predict the future there I came up from Azores to London last summer solo, winds will prob dictate route, i ended up going north then into the channel, which isn't so bad as you keep away from the worst of the traffic. Another option would be keeping a bit further south and making landfall in France, then you can run up the french/belgium/Dutch coast to Cuxhaven. But to be honest what will probabaly happen will be you'll get pushed somewhere with the wind and all plans will change as so they should All those coasts are interesting to visit, pushing the tides with 2 crew, if you try to do long passages you will prob get bored after a couple of tides watching the ground speed go to zero or less on the ebb and want to stop. Fair winds, it's an interesting area.
