Athens airport
We will be picking up children flying into Athens in June. Where is the best place to anchor or best marina to berth for a few days in order to accomplish this task?
We are not yet in the Med and are not at all familiar with the area. We have the Mediterranean Almanac 2010 and it appears to be the most useless book ever purchased. Athens is not even listed in this "sailing guide."
Any advice most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Athens airport
I needed to register to say this, but get Rod Heikell's book "West Ageian" to your hands. It is a must for those sailing there and it has all information about village harbours and anchorages etc.
About Athens itself and its marinas, they are obviously only really expensive marinas in Greece. Athens lay on a cape and airport is on east side of cape whilist Athens itself on west side. I would advise to find some smaller town or village from east side, theirs harbours are most propably free of charge or charges are much less. If you like to spent time also in Athens it might be good idea to leave your boat to Aegina or Poros island, from these places tehre is hydrofoil or as they say "flying dolphin" connections to athens.

Re: Athens airport
we used lavrion marina, and were able to rent a car from the marina office.
much cheaper and easier than being in athens, about 20 mins on the motorway from the airport.
nice marina, nice sleepy town, good yacht chandlers, great fish market and taverna's

Re: Athens airport
Lavrion Olympic Marina is a good choice, but I'm using the Poros harbour for such a cases (taxi from airport to Piraeus and Flying Dolphin to Poros).
It really depends on where do You want to go next. For eastern and central Cyclades chose Lavrio. For Saronic, Argolikos, western Cyclades and Crete chose Poros
If You chose Poros, it is better to leave the boat on the floating pontoons in the northern part of eastern quay. I'm not sure if the water & electricity connections were installed there already, but if not, You can remoor the boat after coming back from Athens, and the place is much safer from the ferry wash - it is important if You will be leaving the boat without anybody onboard.
Cheers
Tomasz

Re: Athens airport
Both are the most convenient for the airport :
Olympic Marina is a good choice, very safe, but expansive (we left METIS for a week a few year ago)...
Lavrio is more pleasant... But to be safe you need to have a mooring line (anchoring could be a m...) and it is not always easy because of the very numerous number of charter boats... We had a good berth for 5 days 2 years ago at the first pontoon on the left at the entrance...

Re: Athens airport
Rather than go to the airport to collect the children, have you considered getting them to travel to meet you?
We chartered from Athens last summer and found the public buses to be reliable and very good value. It was a fast and easy ride to Alimos Marina (about 15km from the city) where we picked up our boat. At the end of our first week, we dropped the younger crew members off at Navplion (at the head of the Argolic Gulf) where they caught an air-conditioned bus back to Athens and transferred to the airport from there.
(As others have mentioned, the islands of Aegina and Poros are also within easy reach by ferry.)

These children are flying as unaccompanied minors, so we very definitely must meet them at the airport. But thanks for mentioning Navplion. That gives us another option, in addition to the Alimos Marina and Lavrion Olympic Marina others mentioned.

If you do go into Athens and Alimos dont do it in the weekend when all rentals are going in or out, the place is full. but come on sunday, monday until thursday the will be room for your 53f, and it is very easy to get to airport with train, taxsi or bus. then you can also do akropolis befor you sail out again.
have small bills for the taxsi, they dont give you back on bigger bills, just smiles and pretend to not understand.(not all are like that)
have a nice tripp.

Re: Athens airport
ok alimos marina you will not get in there it is heaving at the moment with yachts and as far as i was told last week when i came of the hard onto the water there is no berths(visitors ) available now or in the future i am am currently moored up in zea marina yes very expensive but very secure the marina guys make daily and nightly checks on your vessel and check your mooring lines daily its the only place i will leave my yacht in athens area as for getting from athens airport to piraeus is by catching the x96 bus 5 euros per person takes from 45 mins to 1hr travel as for taxis there is a set fee so dont let the taxi driver charge you any more than the goverment transport prices the day time price is 38 euros (0600 to 1800) outside those hrs i think its another 15 euros on top

Olympic Marina and Lavrio Marina are 2 different marinas, even if Olympic Marina is very near Lavrio (town)... In Olympic Marina (a real marina with mooring line, water and electricity and an a real office) you can reserve in advance. In Lavrio (2 quays and one pontonn for yachts inside a commercial port), it will be more simple (no real office, but nice people to whom you will have to ask for a berth when arriving)...
In my point of wiew, Olympic Marina is what you are looking for
