Adriatic sailing

goodmorning,
I will be sailing from Slovenia to Turkey, I was planning to sail croatia-montenegro-albania-corinth-aegean
Some sailors warn me for not to try albania due to security and possibility of sea mines,
If anybody having recent experience could share , will highly be appreciated
thanks

Re: Adriatic sailing

No problem whatsoever. Take a look at the World Cruising Wiki for info.

Re: Adriatic sailing

We transited Albania three years ago. Highly recommend going to the World Heritage site of Butrint from Sarande. The blue eye spring is good too. We used an agent in Sarande, he made things easy. Its a country thats had a tough time, and it shows, but its okay too. One comment though, don't rely on the emergency channel 16. We picked up a swimmer way offshore and in trouble and tried to radio and rather horrified to find nobody answered.

We stopped at Sarande, Durres, Orikum. Durres we were alongside very large vessels, and had to move several times.

hope this helps

Re: Adriatic sailing

We sailed Albania the last 2 years and what a wonderful country. Starting in Schenjgin you can go in as the entire area has been dredged and it is shown in cruising guide 777 but not in the others. The problem with Schenjgin is the dock is a ferry dock so high with wide apart cleats but we did it. They will not answer you on the radio just call and go in and you will be met by an agent and the police.
Next down is Durras. Beautiful town. You do need to call and they will give you permission to enter the port and someone will be on the dock to wave you in. And yes you will or may have a big transport ship behind you but these guys know how to tie you up expertly and no issues. And is just a great town.
Next is Valore. You do need to call the port captain there and ask permission to go to Orikum to check in. A great agent there is Irene who will handle everything. She is Swiss and was a big boat captain and really knows Albania - her website is sailalbania.com (something like that). There is a little marina there and you can leave your boat and travel inland and do not miss the capital Tirinia.
From there you can sail down to Sarande and go in. There is a little u shaped area next to where the ferry boats dock that will hold 4 boats but we tied up on the end of the ferry dock and it was great. We use Nancy as our agent of ourownexpeditions.com who is an American that is married to an Albanian and really helped us out when I got very sick.
The people are great, the country is clean and progressing nicely and the food and wine are outstanding. We had a great time there and look forward to going back.

DO NOT try to stop between ports unless you have checked in. Once checked in when you check out just tell them that you are going to stop between ports and all is ok.
