A Shengen Update please...

Details of the proposal http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/home-affairs...ng_visa_en.pdf

Highlights.

1 year touring visa with no more then 90 days in any one Schengen country, with the possibility of extending it for a further year.

Certain nationals can apply even of they are already in the Schengen area on an existing short stay tourist visa

You will require health insurance cover ( I suspect many EU insurance companies will offer cover cheaply )

The bilateral agreements that countries have with NZ , Australia, US on national visas will be phased out over 5 years.

The regulation will not obviously apply to the UK and Ireland , will apply to Switzerland and has to be adopted by denmark within 6 months of the introduction if it wishes to participate.

It seems we have circus performers to thank for this visa proposal !!

Looks like it would satisfy the requirements.

Dave

Sorry, slow reply because I missed this one!

The current story on Schengen visitor rules (and potential changes) is written up in Immigration and Customs rules for EU, Schengen and other countries | JimB Sail

Just shuffle down the page a bit to "4. The Schengen Zone". This material is condensed from 20 pages or so of European legislation.

Ozzies may have automatic permission to stay in one or other Schengen countries for longer than 90 days - you'd have to ask your own embassy if that was the case.

Nice summary of proposed change Dave. Also "proof of financial means".

There's still no agreement on timing. I'm told Cyprus is still holding things up.

Re: A Shengen Update please...

On 10th September 2014 the proposal was:

3. Proposals under the new Visa Package

3.1
The main elements of the package proposed by the Commission can be summed up as follows:

a reduction in maximum decision-making time from 15 to 10 days from the time of lodging an application to a decision being taken;

the possibility of lodging a visa application in the consulate of another EU Member State if the Member State responsible for processing the visa application is not present or represented in the applicant's country;

the possibility for frequent travellers to benefit from a number of preferential measures, including the mandatory issue of a multiple entry visa valid for three years;

the introduction of a simplified application form;

the possibility for Member States to introduce specific systems for issuing visas at borders, valid for a maximum of 15 days and for a single Schengen state;

the opportunity for Member States to facilitate the issue of visas to visitors taking part in major events;

the introduction of a new type of visa — a touring visa — that allows legitimate visitors to move around within the Schengen area for a maximum period of one year (for a maximum of 90 days within a 180-day period within the same Member State);

the introduction of multiple entry visas and the possibility of granting visas at the border;

the waiver of visa fees for clearly defined categories and facilitation for seafarers and cruise workers.

There are no further updates on Euro Lex, so it looks as though this is still a proposal

Re: A Shengen Update please...

Thanks Jim. I was hoping for a decision but I guess we continue to wait...

Re: A Shengen Update please...

I have to agree with goboatingnow. Next to that, future political changes might even provoke an implementation. The mass of illigal immigrants from North Africa flooding Europe might result in new negotiations with Brussels about the Schengen treaty. How far this will influence international boat travellers will be unknown. I learned from the dailies that Cameron will close down the UK for non-EU immigrants, at a risk of breaking open the Maastricht and Lissabon treaties which will or might lead to a new referendum.

European politics are as transparant as the armour plating of a battleship.

Btw, the community of Hoorn, the Netherlands offer special wintering facilities with shorepower and water provided.
