Zakynthos

N4585K,
Zakynthos has really only one harbour suitable for yachts and that is the main one at Zakynthos town. They charge. Note though that I haven't been there for a while and so stand to be corrected.

Kamariotissa (Samothraki) is 1 euro per day for a 44 footer (no water or electricity), but it took the Greek authorities three days to calculate that.

Thanks Mike, I'll report in the summer. You seem to have a bit of experience in that area. Any recommendations of anchorages that are not to be missed?

Apart from the fact that this is a thread for no-cost harbours, anchorages "not to be missed" are a very personal thing. It depends on what you want, quiet or busy with lots of facilities or whatever, so I would be on a hiding to nothing if I tried listing my preferred spots. Also things change from year to year: for example my most favourite anchorage anywhere was closed to yachts this year by someone building a house on the shore and buoying off nearly the whole bay.

The best thing you could do is get hold of Heikell's "Ionian" pilot book and read his comments. These are the smaller format books but with more detail than his Greek Waters Pilot. He also does them for the West Aegean and East Aegean.

Maybe see you around next summer.

You're right Mike. I do have the Heikell Ionian pilot, but it's from 2011. I was hoping to find more up to date info. I'll keep looking and will do my own discovering!

There is a more recent (2014) edition of the Ionian Pilot. However I use a 2011 version myself and don't find it a problem.

The western side of the southern bay of Zakynthos is free anchoring (kolpos Lagana i think from memory). Added plus is its far enough away from the clubs to not be an issue noisewise.

I would add Lavrion, Greece to the free harbours also - you can take many of the empty charter berths midweek as long as you promise to move before the fleet returns on Friday - good option for Athens on a budget.

Do you mean the town quay of Lavrion or the marina? I would assume the former but it would be good to know for sure.

The Marina is actually a little south and is officially called Olympic Marina. It is most definitely not free! In fact it counts as the second most expensive one we have visited in our 7 years sailing in the Aegean (Bodrum is the most expensive so far).

Exactly which is why knowing about the lavrion town quay is pretty useful

The quay has been taken over by charter boats 100% now (2 years ago there were municipal berths as well but these have been comandeered by the charter operators) Im not sure how legal this comandeering has been hence the accomomdative attitude if the berths a free midweek...

Agios Nikolaos on the east side of the northern cape of Zakinthos is a quayside sheltered by a small island used by ferries. I've never been charged for overnights there.

Re: A List of No-Costs Harbours -PLS add yours

Just sailed across from Malta to The Ionian. At the places I've been so far 1 euro p/m seems the norm. Kioni on Ithaca was free. No electricity though but water is available for purchase. Also Ay Nikolaus on Zakynthos was free as JimB posted, and even had electricity. I'll post more if more free harbors are encountered...

Haven't been charged in Oinoussa yet, but I think that's just because it's the weekend.

Skala Patmos is not free. Update as of 07.17. Low price but not free.
Oinoussa is free. Experience of three times this year.
