Will I have a problem entering the US from Canada with this plan ?
We are making plans to drive from Ontario Canada to North Carolina to pick up a US flagged boat that is being loaned to us and sail her to the Caribbean.
The details:
- family of 4.
- crossing into the US on the Ontario New York border.
- will be driving an older Canadian car owned by my father.
- car will be loaded with gear for a one+ year cruise.
- driving to North Carolina to pick up the boat.
- boat is US flagged, on loan to us.
- boat insurance in owners name, we are designated operators.
- once the boat is commissioned and provisioned the car will be scrapped.
- we plan to sail to Caribbean, possibly VI or Bahamas.
Questions:
- will we be running afoul of any immigration regulations ?
- is there any paperwork we should have for the border crossing ?
- any paperwork we might need to enter other countries ?
- any other advice ?

Obviously clear out properly leaving on the boat.
You may need to pay import on the car, not returning it to Canada?

We also plan to bring an extensive medical kit; That includes antibiotics prescribed to us by our doctor, but obviously more than needed for a single condition.

Thanks, will clear out properly.
Importing a Canadian car seems practically impossible.

Importing the car does seem like an issue. You say scrapped, as in send it to a junk yard? That might work but I think even then you do need to show a clear title.
What's the value of the car? Maybe give it to a Canadian friend if they agree to drive it back to Canada.

GEE....have you asked the government for information because what you might get here is speculation and I wouldn't go with that.

As mottseng sez in #7 - ask those who will have power over you! That ain't us. Going, that would be the US Customs and Immigration Service (whatever they call themselves these days) and coming, if indeed you'll be coming back, which I suspect you will at some time, it will the Canadian Border Services Agency. You can Google them both and get an answer from the horses' mouths. Driving a borrowed, Canadian registered car to a scrapyard in the US isn't goi8ng to find favour with either of them.
When you contact them, make sure you are explicit about the travelling pharmacy.

You may have problems clearing out, as far as I am aware US Customs & Border services will not give you a clearance stamp or documentation, which you may well need at your destination. I'm sure it has been discussed here at length on another thread.

I'd compile a detailed packing list. If unsure how to do this visit a business that routinely ships goods to the US.
Also, make sure you have good legible prescriptions, written by a real doctor, with a phone number to call, for all drugs.
Scrapping an old car shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just keep the plates, get a document that verifies that it was scrapped, so you can take that to us customs if needed.

Re: Will I have a problem entering the US from Canada with this plan ?
I think you will have no trouble at all. My experience is that customs does not really care about your sailing plans. They are looking for drugs and guns and such. Answer their questions honestly and directly:
Where are you headed? A: NC.
What will you do there? A: Sailing.
How long will you be in the USA? A: 3 weeks.
How much pot do you have? A: None.
They aren't going to ask if you intend to sell your car, or where you are headed next. They aren't interested in your old junker, unless its loaded with POT (now legal in canada). You might want to get a signed letter from the car's owner giving you permission to drive it, and take it to the USA, but I doubt you will need it.
Don't bring any oranges with you.

We aren't "foreigners"...we're Canadians! We're like the adorable little bros of the US of A. Americans love us! We have colourful money, spell words like colourful weirdly, and wear strange hats. What's not to like?

Recommend you check out your Ontario HEALTH CARE rules if you expect to continue with your Canadian family heath care services on your return.
These vary by Province and there may be a 6 month rule.

Re: Will I have a problem entering the US from Canada with this plan ?
Bring passports for all four.
Bring title and registration and proof of insurance for your father's car that you will be driving. As to scrapping the car, only the owner can do such, perhaps have the title transferred to you and reinsure it under your name so that you can dispose of the vehicle [sell to scrap yard, or third party or give away to a charity].
Ascertain how your Canadian insurance and other benefits can be maintained.
Clear the boat and the passenger [your family] when departing the US port.
Not sure if you need some kind of documentation that you are the person(s) permitted to use the boat you are borrowing, so as avoid any issues with entry to another country other than the US.
You indicate US flagged, do you mean USCG documented or is it State registered and titled?
