Ecuador: anyone recommend a marina?

I just received a call (Iridium) from my friend, Ikegawa Tomio, currently 350 nm out of Ecuador. They have just passed the Galapagos Islands. He and his wife left Japan last June on a circumnavigation, and are wanting to put in to a marina in Ecuador. He was hoping to gain a berth in "Manta", but has found there are none available.
Does anyone have a good suggestion for an alternative Ecuadoran port with a large marina and good facilities?
Any suggestions welcome!

Re: Ecuador: anyone recommend a marina?

I am not sure there is much in the way of marinas in Ecuador. Don't know if there is anything in Guayaquil area that would be the best chance. When we were there we kept the boat on a mooring in Bahia de Carraquez. There are no marina facilities there but it is (or was at the time) a safe place to leave a boat. Moorings are bow and stern in a river and are owned by a former cruiser who keeps a good eye on them. We left our boat there for a month while we went backpacking in Ecuador and Peru. The river mouth is very shallow and you need to enter at high tide with a local 'pilot' you can get by calling in by VHF. Depths in the river itself are good. More info here, it appears that it is gradually becoming a marina although no helot.

I met them here in Puerto Lucia Yacht Club, Ecuador and helped them out with a few things, very nice people. They sailed south to Chile.
