Anchoring in Washington D.C.

Looked for info on this but only threads I found are pretty old.

Does anyone have current information about anchoring on the Potomac in the Washington D.C. area. Could not see any restricted areas on the charts, but also no anchored boats show up on Google Earth. Would think there must be some restrictions close to Reagan airport, but nothing I could find.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Anchoring in Washington D.C.

was there last June

There is still room to anchor in the Washington Channel and I saw a boat do it. But that's going to put you in the path of all the tours etc and IMO would be sucky. Don't know if you would get chased out if you try too long.

I instead got a mooring and for the $30/day as it is the best deal in DC. Allows you to use the secured dinghy docks and showers etc.

Yeah, I don't think it's technically allowed to anchor up the Channel anymore. The mooring balls are really the best deal. If you choose to anchor outside of Washington Channel, be mindful of the shipping channel and be aware the tidal swing is five or more feet, depending what's going on with the wind.

you can anchor anywhere out of the channel you like

I think I anchored in 6 different places when I went up/down last year

I posted or reviewed all the ones I used in active captain
