An "ANTI" Great Loop question

Just Joking!!! My wife in I are very stoked to do the Great Loop, but that's a different thread.

My question is: in the Great Lakes is the North or South route the most expedient / safe from Lake Erie to Chicago.

We're bringing a Lagoon 39 Sailing Cat from Antigua to Chicago (long story). The route so fare is planed to NYC. From there the mast is stepped in the Hudson and taking the Erie Canal to Lake Erie.

In a year or two we when we have more time we want to make it a scenic, enjoyable trip, but the initial goal is basically boat delivery.

Maybe I'm missing something what's the south route? The only way from Lake Erie that I know of is up the Detroit river to Lake Huron then over to Lake Michigan .
