Where to anchor/fish/swim/dive

What is your favourite destination in Hong Kong? And what activities do you normally do when out?

We have gone to the beach side of Cheung Chau a number of times. Have consider anchoring in the little bay further NW on Cheung Chau where the beach looks nice (until you get close and see all the garbage washed ashore there)

We are planning to visit Sai Kung and even further East, in search of quiet places with sandy beaches, and (somewhat) clean and clear water. Suggestions?

Being located in Gold Coast, the water isn't very appealing. Of all the garbage that China flushes out, a great bit comes right around the corner and into HK from the West. Both visibility (near 0), but also all the weird mainland articles you see in the water. Disgusting and unethical. From condoms over shoes, clothes, water bottles and even up to furniture pieces and other larger items.

So we are planning to go even further than Sai Kung. Not so interested in fishing as much but swim, dive and beach has our interest. Doesn't have to be any facilities there as long as we can hook the boat.

hi there

Lamma's power station beach is rather a good spot, secluded and protected, and on the beach there is a healthy atmosphere with bbqs and bonfires

the bottom is sandy, although there is a sandbank about 20m from shore during low tie

cheers

How is the water visibility normally? Last we were in Cheung Chau, which is not THAT far away, I could barely see the propellers and rudders when I was 1 foot away from them ... hope Lamma is better.

Well.....depends on the day

But the only place to have a decent experience is from Clearwater bay all the way up north to double Haven ( the Yan Chau Tong marine Park, double island, crescent island)

Cheers

Hi DIBT,

I am newbie in cruisers forum who growth up in Hong Kong.
Get back to your question, there is nothing good in the western side of Hong Kong like, cheung chau, lamma, lantau, and of course not gold coast.

You can only fine good water at eastern side of Hong Kong. which somehow starting from Clear water bay all the way north to Crooked island.
There are some marine parks (Hoi Ha, Yan Chau Tong...) which you can dive (no fishing). Or non-marine parks like Lung Ha Wan, Little Palm Beach, you can do dive and fishing.
Grass island itself is good for visit, and western side of grass island or the bay nearby (not hoi ha) is a good location for anchoring, diving and fishing.
In fact, that coast line have lots of beaches and good spots, just tried to name out some.

hope this help

We like the Sai Kung area a lot. We rent kayaks, paddle boards, swim, clam and windsurf a bit.

On Lantau we would take bus from Mui Wo to the beach by Tung Fuk.....Nice beach to play and eat at some cute restaurants. However, on our last visit, the beaches were full of trash (esp plastic bags) dumped by the Chinese. We haven't gone back since. There is kiteboarding nearby.

We went to Long Ke Tsai a few weeks ago. This stretch of beach is just under 100 meters long and it also had some garbage. We collected all the garbage and stowed it - then advised the government contractor of the location.

Unfortunately, more trash kept washing in constantly. Judging from the type of trash and labeling, it’s mainly from the Chinese fishermen to the west side of Sai Kung.

Apart from trash - it’s a great location. No facilities except a water tap on the nearby Long Ke Wan campground. And poor to no internet coverage which was great actually - a forced decoupling from the world.
