Gulf and San Juan Islands, PNW and 5 weeks in the Greek Islands in the late 80's... different island every night... marvelous people, food, music and partner... oh, the memories... Capt Phil

Port Davey - South West Tasmania - isolated, rugged wilderness with beautiful sheltered anchorages.

Yep, Port Davey coupled with the beautiful D"Entrecasteaux (sp?) channel are why we keep going back to Tassie... and the folks there are willing to put up with Yanks as well... at least most of the time!

If only the weather was nicer...

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Where Is the Best Place You Have Sailed ?

Our hands down favorite cruising grounds is Cuba. We wrote about it on our blog here. We can not wait until it will be legal for us to return. Second favorite is the Rio Dulce, we detailed that trip on our Sea Trek blog. After about the third or fourth time, the Bahamas are just OK now that we have a good perspective. Chuck

Bahamas, no question. The journey to and from is an unforgettable trip in itself. Wished I'd had been around when the "Doctor" from Marsh Island was looking for his island!

Re: Where Is the Best Place You Have Sailed ?

We have sailed from the Canary Islands to Barbados, 2 years in Mexico, Costa Rico, Panama, up the Tenn Tom 400 miles, Bahamas, 3 years in the Caribbean including Venezuela, (before Chavez), Trinidad, Cuba, Chesapeake, Florida keys and panhandle. Loved most all places, except some unfriendly islands in the Caribbean, like St. Vincent.

Best for us was our time in the Sea of Cortez, west coast of Mexico, 1988 & 1989. It may have changed, but the local people were wonderful and we never felt threatened in any way. Fishing was excellent, (of course I have one of the few sailboats with a fighting chair), diving in the crystal clear warm water was unbelievable, Corona was $3.30 a case , met many great cruisers, and on.

Cuba is a close second. We hope the BS stops so we can go back and stay a year or so.

In 1993, Puerta La Cruz, Venezuela was wonderful, diesel fuel was $0.12 per gallon, friendly locals, good food and a very scenic country. I would not go there again until the dictator is gone.

Re: Where Is the Best Place You Have Sailed ?

Since this thread serves to direct others to cool places, I suggest those in the PNW visit Lake Union, the Duwamish river and best of all Skagit Flats....HoHo!!!! The best place has to be wherever the boat is.

Re: Where Is the Best Place You Have Sailed ?

Hey, oldcal46skipper, I think I shared a few cervesas with you in the Sea of Cortez anchored in La Paz in the late 80's. You had some extra dorado you gave us as I recall. I remember your fishing chair well. We were aboard our Transpac 49 ketch, Snowbird, at the time. It would be amazing if it was you, Tom... cheers, Capt Phil

Re: Where Is the Best Place You Have Sailed ?

So many places
The one thing they all had in common was:
No people
No restaurants
No other boats
But they had an abundance of unspoilt pristine environment and seafood to be caught and feasted on.
And no, I'm not telling.
