Sydney Australia to Mobile Alabama

This may be silly, but I am looking at a Trimaran in Australia and we're not quite ready to sell all and move on board for several more years. This Horstman Trimaran has really caught my eye though. What is the fastest route to get her back home? So the question is from Sidney Australia to Mobile Alabama is it fastest to cut west around South Africa then up into the Caribbean, or east, through Tahiti, Marquesas, Panama then north along mexico into the Gulf? I think safety is about equal either way you go. Africa is not particularly safe, but neither is Nicaragua, Columbia, and Honduras. If one was ready to go, and not push pretty hard to get home, how long would it take to make the trip?

Fastest way would be E following wind and currents as they curve up S America... through the canal and then N up to the Gulf... if your up for a 6-8 week sail from Sydney to Panama...
Or... you could hire a slightly crazy delivery skipper to get it to Panama...

I would look into a delivery, but I was quoted something like $20,000 for a delivery from LA to Mobile. If a Sidney to Mobile is priced like that it would cost more than the purchase price of the boat!!

Buying in Australia and shipping to the US seems unique in this market. We bought in the US. Prices are 1/2 to a 1/3 cheaper at least in terms of well equipped blue water monohulls.

True, but there are only a few Horstman Trimarans on the market at any given time. Right now I know of 4: Southern California, Bay St Louis Mississippi, Virginia and Port Stephens Australia. The ones in Southern Cal and Virginia seem to be the most equipped, but the Australia boat looks clean, simple and if the listing is accurate is 20 years newer than any of the others.

Frankly there isn't a good way. $20,000 seems pretty reasonable, and I am not sure if you did it yourself you would save a huge amount off this price. The cost in food, provisions, wear on the boat, fuel, permits, canal crossing, ect.. Quickly add up. Plus you have the eight weeks you aren't working to consider.

Well the Sydney to Panama leg is 9000+ miles no-stop depending on how long/far before the winds curved N at the time of year.. reckon that'd set you back at least $15,000... if all goes smoothly... from there on I'd do it myself if I were you, once through the Canal its likely 2-3 weeks if you go for it.. and the Transits worth the experience..
if you decide to see the sights... how longs a piece of string..
If you want to cost a Transit contact Erick at info@centenarioconsulting.com ... and give him the details.
He's the agent who handled my last transit.. good man and works for you.. had no complaints at all.

Re: Sydney Australia to Mobile Alabama

Surely it will be a more enjoyable and less expensive experience to come over for a month having bought it, hang out, sail and work on the yacht and leave it in Australia somewhere. Go back home and come over on a sailing holiday every year until you are ready to move aboard and start the big trip. The money you save on delivery skipper expenses will be spent on your own life adventures :-)

Thats not a bad idea actually, fly over and island hop back across the pacific if i could line up long term storage on islands along the way. Fly over and sail a couple of weeks, then find a slip or dry storage for a few months, then make another leg of the trip.
