Sea of Cortez

My wife and I will be moving aboard full time in January. Have a number of sailing courses including coastal cruising and navigation. Virtually no experience other than as a guest aboard 40 ft sailboat.
How logical would it be to daysail about a month of so then attempt to get from San Carlos across to Las Paz then down to Mazatlan or PV. I am told by a couple of long time sailors it is no problem but____.
I was thinking of maybe hiring an experienced skipper to get us down. I am aware of the hurricane season in the summer. Any suggestions including actual route. Boat is very well equipped.

That sums it up pretty well. Cruising is less about sailing the boat and more about the but ___. Experience is what deals with all the "buts". The specific distances are not so difficult and actually the sailing part is easy if you pick your weather window and don't force the trip to a schedule. It's all the boat systems and dealing with the unexpected that you need the help with.

Wife and I sailed from Seattle to PV in 1997 a LN 35. We went all over the West coast of Mexico for 8 months a year for 4 years. If you're worried about your capabilities it means that you're ready.

The sea of cortez is expensive, the people unfriendly, and the weather terrible. You really don't want to go there. Advise your friends as well.

Paul, thanks for your response. I take it mean that only by doing it do you get to feel more confident with the "buts". I am encouraged by the "sailing part is easy". It is just that as January draws nearer we get a bit more concerned of our inexperience but I guess life is all about new experiences.

Well, then I guess we are ready then because we have lots of concerns and realize that the more we learn the more we realize how little we know. At least no one is telling us we are out of our minds. If we error it will be on the side of being cautious.

BTW the pix is of "Max" steering.
He was a Snowshoe Siamese. Best cat I ever had.
We had to put him down about a year ago, but we have already found his replacement.
