Sailboats are BANNED!

Quibban Reservoir in central Mass allows fishing boats with up to 25hp. motors, including stinky 2-strokes. But sailboats are forbidden!! WHAT???

You're in San Diego. Is this a big worry?

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

Thank Gawd... I hate it when those puffy white sails and boats get in the way of my waterskiing vaulting!

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

That's because everyone knows that sailors pump their heads directly overboard. How would you like that in your drinking water?

If that reservoir has anything to do with electrical power generation, banning sailboats (with usually conductive 'masts') is often standard procedure. Since HV power lines often traverse such bodies of water and a mast might make contact, zap.
EG: Calaveras Lake (Texas) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The reservoir was formed in 1969 by the construction of a dam to provide a cooling pond for a complex of power plants, to supply additional electricity to the city of San Antonio.[1]

The dam and lake are managed by CPS Energy of San Antonio. Together with the smaller Victor Braunig Lake, Calaveras Lake was one of the first projects in the nation to use treated wastewater for power plant cooling. The reservoir is partly filled with wastewater that has undergone both primary and secondary treatment at a San Antonio Water System treatment plant. Calaveras Lake also serves as a venue for recreation, including fishing and boating. Sailboats are prohibited on the lake."

Changed jobs, moved the big boat to Boston (yeah, freezing my butt off). Built a small wooden sailboat years ago, hoping for a summer weeknight venue.

Sail boating and windsurfing = due to “potential
public health, safety, and logistical problems”
(MDC, 1998). Specifically, MDC personnel are
worried about the impact on human health if
human waste enters the reservoir. Safety
concerns center around the ease at which these
objects tip over. This is because the temperature
in the main body of the reservoir is “fairly
cold” year round (personal communication).
Logistical problems stem from the fact that the
MDC Quabbin does not have enough man
power to patrol the entire reservoir and come to
the aid of people stranded in the water in a timely manner.

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

There is a marina in the Delta that, until recent years, banned motor vessels. Such were considered too noisy.

Sunny here on Whidbey Island today. T-shirt weather, with a high of 58f.
As the weatherman said last night, "Summer in Winter in Washington State".

Don't move here from CA !!!

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

So motor boaters don't pee in the water but sailors do? And there were over 500 motorboat deaths in the US last year, mostly small open ones like they allow - but only 3 sailboat deaths nationwide. Yes, sailing is way too dangerous. And I'm sure all those motor boaters need no patrolling, they just fish and drink beer. What a total bunch of bull!

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

And yes, we should ban sailing wherever the water is "fairly cold," such as the Pacific Ocean.

Re: Sailboats are BANNED!

Quabbin reservoir only holds 412 billion gallons of water - if somebody pees in it, it's ruined.

Powerboater's engines never fail, don't you know.

And I guess windsurfers must soil themselves with some regularity when they tip over.
