Pirate Alley or the Horn ?

We can't decide whether to:

Go through Pirate Alley and Backsheesh Lane (Yemen and Red Sea)

---or---

South around the Cape

We'll be leaving from the Arabian Sea; and whilst I'd love to spend some quality time in the Red Sea, I really don't know if I'll be able to hand the money grabbers there.

But from what I've read, people don't really stop in West Africa - it seems they tend to blast straight up the Atlantic...

I need some opinions....

Is your boat fixed? It had a big hole at front IIRC...

Easy . . . Cape Hope . . . South Africa is an absolutely marvelous country to visit and explore . . . The sailing is pretty good and the weather mid-summer not very hard. There are some nice and interesting stops in the S Atlantic, one of our all time favorites is St Helena.

The only reason I can see to do the Red Sea these days is if you are desperate to get to the Med/Europe as quickly as possible.

Other than the Gulf of Aden, we actually enjoyed the Red Sea--eritrea and Sudan-- and you can safely park the boat in Hurgada marina and see Egypt by land. IF you can safely convoy thrugh the Gulf of Aden, its a fascinating trip.

If you go the other way, it can get windy around Madagascar, and you will not want to be out south of Durban when the SW wind blows against the current, but the weather is doable if you take your time and get good forecasts. The long trip up from the Cape to the Caribbean is a milk run, but if you want to get to Europe, you will have to do some work to weather.

We went up the Red Sea because the admiral had already gone the other way once, but if I was going to do it again, I'd go round the Cape just to see more of the world.

The Horn of Africa.

It sounds more impressive on Internet Forums

Umm, well.... no. Not yet. Hole is still there (I did take some photos, but then the Captain lost the camera). That's why we've got time to do a bit of planning!!

Temperature's still around 47C and quite humid now, so no-one's in much of a hurry to do anything. Except plan. And swim. And work out on the elliptical. And a bit of yoga. And cook. And crack a few bags of popcorn. Apart from that, nothing much happening here!!

I believe our carpenter has made a template for the nose, though... I'm guessing that's a job he could do indoors.

Definitely go down and around South Africa. Having lived in South Africa, I can say that it is an excellent place to go visit!!!!!! It is better to take that trip and get to the Med safely than to get kidnapped and held hostage, or killed which has happened to a number of cruisers!
