Re: Panama Canal or Strait of Magellan - Would You Take the Road Less Traveled ?

Magellan was discovered way earlier then the Cape by (of course) Magellan.
The Cape was discovered later through LeMaire Straight and named after the dutch trading village of Hoorn by the Dutch captains LeMaire and Schouten.

Re: Panama Canal or Strait of Magellan - Would You Take the Road Less Traveled ?

It seems the Canal is no longer the bargain it once was. I saw an article on rounding South America west to east, during the winter months on a Passagemaker, not a sailboat: the article indicated the weather was less severe in the winter, which while counterintuitive isn't that strange to me having grown up near Cape Mendocino and its pressure gradient summer winds.

Who has been there and done that, and did they leave any description of it that is here on the Internet?

have ye checked out the panama canal site?? google panama canal--there is lso noonsite.
the new prices are now in place at much more than was in june. makes it serious consideration--canal or cape--both will be costly--for cape--warm clothes, foodstuffs for longer cruise, more charts to cover the extra area to be sailed, etc...cod well be equal in costs atthis time. dont forget fuel prices and availability.

Yeah, but on the upside someone can then always include in every CF post "when I sailed around Cape Horn" - including in things like the "Which can opener is best" thread (yes, there really was one! and no, it wasn't a pisstake ).

For boats under 50feet the base price went from $500 to $800 (after 14 years). It is still a bargain.

Funny. Then one becomes like Cato the Elder who ended each speech with Ceterum censeo Carthaginem delendam esse.
